After dark, someone started began pounding on my front door.  I live in a semi rural area and know all of my neighbors.  I also live at towards the end of a road with no egress so there is no one just passing by my house.

As the person pounded on my door, I had Judy call the Sheriff and then Holly ran up to the door and let out her "I'll rip your head off!" bark.  That apparently made the intruder decide that he didn't want to intrude - which I am very happy about.

He should also be happy because beginning with the time my area was pretty well filled with coyoyes, I have kept a twelve gauge double barrel shotgun in the rear of our coat closet - unloaded but with five rounds of buckshot in a holder on the gunstock.

The Sheriff  Deputies took a half hour to get to my house. By the time they arrived,  Holly with her big bark had solved the problem for both me and for the intruder who would have been a very unhappy fellow had he broken in...

Good dog!!!  Scary.

Good girl Holly! Things like this do make me wonder if I should encourage Darwin to bark more. That being said, he does seem to do well when the situation calls for it. He never barks, not even when people knock on the door. UNLESS, he has barked when something is awry. Once at 2am he was barking and it woke all of us up because he never does, turns out SIL was on the porch with a boy... Darwin knew something wasn't right. LOL!

Omg lol Darwin! I bet sil wasn't so happy lol

Wow...I would have been afraid to let Gracie Doodle out for fear she would get shot or injured!  Gracie is a great barker when there is a stranger but I just don't know what she would do.  She hasn't a mean or dangerous bone in her body.  Anyone who comes to our house, repair man, delivery or solicitor...once I open the door she runs and gets a toy and comes back to ask them to play with her!  Some watch dog!  But that was scary stuff for you Richard!  Glad all is well.

I don't think he let her out Nancie, Holly let out her "Ill rip your head off" bark.

Monty is the same way (and Auggie caught up very quickly as well). He's got a ferousious bark when somebody rings the door bell or when we have just the glass storm door, he barks at everyone walking in front of our house. But as soon as the "intruder" is in the house, he would lick him to death.

Richard, what a scary situation.

Nancie, Libby is exactly the same way!  Although she does bark when someone knocks at the door and also makes a very mean growl "until" the door is open and then she is their "best" friend!  There is not a mean or ficious bone in her body whether a person or an animal comes in our home.  Hopefully if anythng happens like it did to Richard Libby's bark would scare them away too!  Richard's story is my worst nightmare and I am so glad Holly kept things under control, since the Sheriff took a little time to get there!

Isn't it funny how our sweet doodle babies know exactly when to let out their "I'm a big Rottweiler" bark?! !! Yay Holly!

Good girl, Holly!

Way to go, Holly! I am glad she took care of the situation for you.

Good girl, Holly! Is there a window in your door, so the person could see her? Halas has a big-boy bark, but I don't think an intruder would be very intimidated if they could actually see him. On the opposite end of the spectrum, I used to have a husky that didn't bark at all, but people would be intimidated by him, because he would just sit and stare at them without blinking.

So aside from your quick thinking, phone call, shotgun/buckshot and assumed coyotes Holly is truly the Hero in this scenario. Good Girl Holly!

I am happy that you are all safe and apparently all very level headed.
