I have been taking Ollie out soon after he eats, or drinks, but not sure how long to keep him out there if he is just playing...If he does Pee or Poop, I make a big deal out of it of course. But how long should you let them play, before saying ok, he is not going to do anything...I usually wait about 5 to 7 min, then bring him back in, and try again in about 15-20 minutes...Any hints would be greatly appreciated...Oh and we do not have a doggie door or fenced area, so I take him out on a leash at all times. He has taken very nicely to the leash, and seems to walk well with it...Oh and one more thing, when do you start to see the real coat come in? Is it usually at a year old?...I know he has curly ears, lol, but the rest of him is a fluff ball, lol...He is an F1 mixture...Thanks guys

When I take him out I do the and say the same thing that you do, and I make a big deal out of his going....I don't know if taking away the water after 5 P.M. is really such a good idea, did u do that?
As far as taking him outside, sounds like you are doing it right. And dont restrict his food/water intake. It takes time but he will get it.

My Abby is 5 months old and her coat is the same as when she was a new pup, just a lot longer.
I think 5 minutes is long enough and then if he doesn't potty I would bring him in and crate him for the next time period so he for sure won't pee in the house.
We are having the exact same problem - Cooper (9 weeks old) will sometimes go potty outside, but would rather play and eat grass! Then she will often go potty inside a few minutes after we bring her inside. We have tried putting papers down, but she will just tear them up. She is not going potty in her crate, but we only put her in there at night (its currently in the bedroom). She naps during the day in her play pen, and she will go potty in there, and on the carpet and kitchen floor. She is not giving any signs that she needs to go potty.

We take her out after every feed and drink, every nap, and every big playtime

Thankfully she sleeps through the night
Hi Kaytlin, well Ollie turns 3 mos old on the 3rd of July....He is doing well with his housebreaking, as long as I watch him. If I see him sniffing around, I quickly say Ollie, lets go out, and he runs to the door and sits and waits for me to put his leash on. He goes right out and pees and maybe poops....He gets a treat as he gets back in the house. So maybe we are finally getting somewhere. Of course he does not sleep thru the night!!!! and that is driving me nuts. I hear him sort of whining, I get up, take him out and then back to sleep. He usually does this around 3-4 am, ugh, but he does have to go and does. Then he gets up again about 6-6:30 and he goes again...Thenn he gets breakfast and so the day begins....He was a the vet today for his shots, and he weighed in at 15 1/2 lbs. He gained 5 lbs in 2 weeks...But the vet was happy he was too thin he said, so we increased his food to 1 3/4 cup in the am, and again the same at night...I just love him, I love his wonderful personality, lol, now if I could get him rained, I would be just thrilled....Cheryl
Until he gets used to "peeing on command", give Ollie a treat immediately after doing his business. Have treats in your pocket at all times! Peri is 12 weeks now and we don't have to do that - I say the code word "pee pee time" and she goes immediately. She gets a "good girl, good pee pee", then inside for training/treat time after she has eliminated. She still has a slip once or twice a week, but overall, she is on the road to being housebroken. Hope that helps. Oh and I do take water away around 8:30 or so. 5 would be way to early in my opinion!
Hi Allyson, I do give a treat and praise to the hills, I use the words pee pee and poop and he understasnds them, lol. I have now taken the water away by 8 pm, and his last walk before bedtime is around 11:30, and he wakes at around 3-4 and I hear him and take him out....I just wish he would sleep thru the nught, but I guess that will come with time, lol
Awe-he sounds like a good little puppy! Ours thank goodness never woke up at night-he can hold his pee forever!!! He trained very quickly and maybe he was just into it-but there was no playing when we took him out until he had done his "business" We took him into the yard-whether he is on a leash or not should not matter- and we would stand like a statue-if he ran to us to play we would turn around and stand still and tell him to do"good boys" (stupid name but that is what my family always called the pee and poop thing) After a few minutes-he got the point and did it. THEN IT WAS PLAY TIME!!! BTW this was in December and the temp was freeeezing cold here in Toronto so I thank God this is now a distant memory. Re the coat-Thomas is nine mths old now and I would say has had a fully adult coat for about 1 mths now. Unfortunately, the matting has started. Groomed on Monday though-no more matts and his hair is NOT shaved-still fleecy. You just have to keep a handle on this and brush them frequently.(even though he hates it and bites at me the entire time) Hope this helps. As usual my msg is not short.
