The article I have a link to on cnn.com states that the chemicals in the Glade Plug-ins and a few other household cleaners can cause health problems in dogs. I've also heard that Frabreeze can cause health problems as well.

Has anyone else seen or heard of this?

Here is another informative link: (thank you F, Calla & Luca for providing it)

Added note:

I have had pet birds for 20 years and I'm always very conscious of any airborne type cleaners, fragences, etc. as this potential hazards can kill them. Even overheating teflon coated pans can kill a bird and I've had a friend who lost her bird to this mistake. I remember hearing stories a few years ago when Febreeze came out on the market that it was causing health issues in dogs and cats whose owners would spray their animal beds and couches with the fabric freshener.

Here is a link to a news report on ABC about if these kinds of reports are true or not.

I, personally, still try to be more cautious regardless of what is being reported.

Many lessons can be learned from that experience.

This is sad. I don't use Round UP either and try to discourage my neighbors from  using it as well to avoid over spray. I'm sure they think I'm nuts. :) No comment please F. LOL

No comment. I no longer spray any weeds except for occasionally PI outside the fence where I can't reach it and neither can the dogs. We live with the weeds and try to use strategies like pulling, grass seeding and how I mow etc. to decrease their numbers. I pulled hundreds of plaintains this year.

I try to see my weeds as under appreciated over achievers. Sounds like your plantain qualify.  Did you know they are edible?

No thanks : ) i like lots of weeds and i have many, Queen Anne's Lace and goldenrod, in my garden. Some i have even planted.

I agree that chemicals such as those used in these products can be dangerous, especially when exposed to them 24/7 as one would be using a plug-in product.  I have also read about them triggering seizures in epi dogs. I would never expose myself or my animals to them. That being said, this article is really lacking in information and could have been better written.

Read my reference.
Sharlan, perhaps you can add my reference to your original post.

Things like Glade plug-ins, Febreze, Teflon coated pans and even scented candles, have been on my radar for years. I have 2 cockatoos whose respiratory systems are ultra sensitive and the above items can kill them if used in close proximity (overheated Teflon releases toxic fumes). We're very careful of any type of product with strong scents or volatile compounds. Even the indoor house paint we use is the zero VOC type. I can't remember the last time I used the cleaning function on my 'self cleaning' oven. The fumes that the high temps emit can be deadly.

WTD? I had no idea that Plugins were considered dangerous by many people? During the holidays I always use the plugins from Bath and Body Works. Not to cover up any odors or anything. :-) Just to make my house smell more like Christmas. I would just bake an actual apple pie to get the smell...  but then I would eat it! I love the ideas in here about simmering lemons and spices, but I honestly had never thought plugins would be bad.

I'm going to start doing more research into this. How disturbing.

Camilla, there is all kinds of information and "recipes" on-line about making your own "air fresheners" from natural ingredients, and lots of them have ideas for that Christmas-y smell. Here's one: http://cleanmyspace.com/diy-natural-home-deodorizers-air-fresheners/

Thanks for this Karen!
