I am starting this now, as my town celebrated yesterday, but I know some people are celebrating today and Monday. Everyone can add throughout the weekend. How did your doodles do with the fireworks? I wasn't sure how Darwin would react, I was expecting anything from him barking like mad to falling asleep during them. It was more the latter. He seemed mildly interested in the first few booms, then spent the rest of the time laying in the grass and begging for potato chips. I should have figured, he doesn't get bothered by much.
We took him to the park that a carnival was being held at, and the biggest challenge ended up being all the food dropped on the grass. We gave more "leave it" commands than we have in a whole month put together!
Yep, Pete and repeat. One does something and then the other goes, "Oh yea, I need to (whatever) 'cause (Ned/Clancy) did."
BTW Ned has gotten more alpha lately. He has started protecting Simon (our old guy) at the dog park, or he might tolerate a stranger petting him, then when they start to pet Clancy, Ned growls (not at Clancy getting the attention), which sets Clancy to growl. Ned just needs a chill pill!
Ours started barking as soon as the first ones went off (neighborhood ones, we were home in the house, TV on to try and mask the noise). I started handing out treats for each one where they did NOT bark .... pretty soon Lucy would hear one and come running for her treat vs. barking (she is so treat motivated). You could tell they were still not enjoying it, but it went better than I thought it was going to. They slept with us in our room vs in their room as I knew they would just bark otherwise. They did both go out for a last bedtime potty while the fireworks were going off which surprised me. Normally Lucy will have no part of potty if there are fireworks or gunshots going off. So, all in all it was a fairly good night.
Our fireworks were last night, and we opted not to go. I knew Guinness would be fine, but I thought Murphy might be anxious. It's very hot here (high 90s), so the house was all closed up with the air conditioning on. I also put on the TV, so they could barely hear the fireworks. Murphy was a little curious when he did hear something, but it just wasn't loud enough to scare him. No problems last night.
Wilson did okay I stepped out on our porch a lot of neighbors shooting them off no need to go too the park he stayed by my side and Ijust kept petting him
As with 3 distinct personalities, we had 3 different reactions. Zeke pretty much ignored them until there were some really close and in quick succession then he went behind my husbands chair for a while. Lily stayed in her crate most of the evening venturing out only to potty during a quiet time. Jasper our new little guy was curious but not frightened. He would look up to see the flashes but didn't seem to be too bothered by the noise. I should also mentioned that our air conditioner died Sat. so our windows were all open. Overall we made it fine. Lily was much relieved when we all went to bed and things got quiet.
We were out of town for the fireworks visiting my parents. I was afraid to take her because she is a bit skittish with certain things, so I left her with my Dad. He says that she came to get him (in the computer room) and kept looking back to make sure he was following her, and she led him to the window, stood up against the window and watched the fireworks with him... I'm not so sure that's how it happened (lol). But I was very happy to know that it didn't scare her!
On July 3rd Shelby woke me up barking due to some firework noise in the neighborhood. I think this was more so her alert bark to tell me she heard something - she displayed no fear.
Last night (the 4th) - I planned our walk in order to be done before prime firework time. Unfortunately.... we got delayed by two different families asking about her and giving her lots of attention (not a bad thing at all), and when we were about 5 houses from home.... someone within a block or two set off a fire work...... (High pitch squeel sound as it went up.... color, then BOOM). Shelby freaked out.... tail between the legs trying to run to the house. I calmed her down... and we continued walking - they managed to get one more off before we got to the door.
Got in the house and acted normal.... she followed me around, tail between her legs.... then she heard some more and hid under the bed for a while. I took a quick shower (to get the mosquito spray off me) and she was still under the bed. She eventually came out and I laid down on the floor and she curled up with me while we watched TV. She was on high alert, I fell asleep... she woke me up about an hour later chewing on a treat bone - which was a good sign, she wouldn't touch it earlier in the evening due to stress.
Well it was a really good night here. Oliver really could have cared less, he heard the booms, but just ran to the window to look. It was raining, so I guess he figured it was just another thunderstorm, and he doesn't get upset with them. Renny does not like the noise, thunder, fireworks et al...He just went in his crate and went to sleep. of course he slept with one eye open, lol, till the noise calmed down. So here it was a good night. I was kind of worried about Oliver, he was so little last year this time, but I guess I worried for nothing...He was his same wonderful playful self, and at around 10 pm he was ready for his last walk and then bed. I had to wake him at my bedtime to get him in his crate in our room.
