Does anyone have experience re crate training. Jack needs to go back in his crate at night since he won't stop going potty on the carpet. He is peeing over a spot that I can't seem to get the scent out of no matter what.

I really need to get hard wood floor put down for my lungs sake but I can't do that yet. He has not slept in a crate in almost two  years. I hate to do it but I don't know any other options.

How do I start?

I am so sorry that he is doing this.  I would start from scratch and put him in during the day for brief periods with a reward or a kong and peanut butter to keep him busy.  Another option - could you use a baby gate to enclose him in a certain room like the bathroom where if he pees, it will be on tile?

I do have a ton of baby gates, He has never done well with being gated off from me, ever, He can jump over the highest baby gate I have without a problem.

There is no medical reason that Jack has to potty in the middle of the night, I let him out before I go to bed at midnight and then I get up with him at seven to potty, to me, it should be reasonable to expect him to hold it that long. I think the issue now is I can't get the smell out of the carpet so he smells it and thinks he can go there, I don't smell it even with my nose in it, but he can smell better then me.

Karen... I don't have any advice on the reintroducing the crate, but maybe Jack will surprise you and fall back into the routine.  As for the carpet... Have you tried Nature's Miracle?  I assume so - given you've been on DK for a while, but I had great luck with it during Shelby's potty training.  Good luck... let us know how it goes.

Natures Miracle does not work for us.. Jack must have super strong pee of something..

I would just put him in at night with no nonsense.  Just say your word (like CRATE) and put him in.  I think if they were crate trained in the beginning it is not really a big deal to re-crate.   If YOU make a big deal about it, he will assume it is a big deal.

I  don't know but I think I agree with both BG and Nancy, start small and don't make a huge fuss. Good luck and let us know how it goes!

Thanks I am going to do that...... I think he just needs to retrain himself to hold his urine overnight, There is not any medical reason he can not, I believe it has become his habit of getting up to go potty in the middle of the night, I hear him jump off the bed  but I don't wake up enough to realize....

We are going to do it tonight. Thanks for the advice.

I suggest you 'just do it' =)  He'll be okay.

Just

I agree with the others Jen...

Jack is smart and he wil be fine in his crate...even if it might not be his "first" choice or yours either!    Lol...

You will be the one that has to be "strong"...and it will be the best for Both of you...

Stay Strong And Consistant...and Jack will get back on the right track.

When we decided to be a "show dog family" for awhile, I crate trained my two dogs (6 months and 8 years) by feeding them in the crate for about two weeks with the door open. Then put them in with a small treat with door shut.  Neither of them had any problems.

all I have done so far is put the crate back in my bedroom and put some treats in it, that is it, Jack is hiding on the other side of the house.... I kid you not, this should be fun , I am not going to cave, I am not going to cave, i am not going to cave.... I have to fix this issue with him.
