LOL...I haven't had a tiny puppy yet. Mine was a giant at 8 weeks. But I can see how it would be tough. Like with a Pomeranian puppy or other smaller breeds! How do they tell?

I guess just be sure you give him enough time out there...maybe keep a section of grass trimmed REALLY short?
Adina, I took your advice, and just kept him out there, I think he went, he even looked at me when he did it. I praised him to the stars, my neighbors must have thought I was nuts...He finally pood outside tonight, lol, I was thrilled lol
All I can say is maybe look for the wet spot!
Linda when u live in Florida, the grass is always wet, lol, either from the sprinklers, or the sudden showers everyday...but I would think anywhere else that might work, lol, thanks
Yucky as this my sound, I had to use a tissue and wipe him to see if he was wet from just having peed. Besides giving him plenty of time. Is there someplace with cement or asphalt that he can go to. That helped too.
I didn't do the cement area, I thought the grass would be better, but I can try that, great idea, ty
When we got our 8 weeks old last Dec. there was snow on the ground-so we could tell. Having said that-he would run around a lot first and want to play. We learned to stand there like a statue until he did his business. We just stood still-no playing- and told him to do "good boys" (our version of-"will you pee for heavens sakes-it is freezing out here) Then when he had done his thing-pee or poop-we would run around like crazy with him and tell him "what a good boy"!! at least 10 times. We took him out every 15 minutes and did this, although it is a distant nightmare now, thank goodness as it was FREEZING. We had an unusually cold winter here in Toronto. It paid off though-because within 2 weeks, he would go to the door to let us know he had to go out. We were amazed. As far as being able to tell if he has gone-maybe like someone else said=check out his "wick" (my mother's name for it) If it is wet-then horrays are in order. Or maybe you could put a few of those puppy training pads down in your yard-maybe he will go on one of these and you will know right away. Good luck and congrats-I cannot wait to see his pic's.
Debbie we kept him out for a 1/2 hr tonight, and he finally pooped. We made such a big deal of it. We had gone out for my sons birthday for dinner, so we were out 3 hrs. I thought he might pee in the crate, but he didn't, I went to pick him up and he got away from me and before I could grab him he peed on the den floor. Thank goodness we have all tile floors here...I was told not to give him anything to eat or drink after 6:30 P.M., but I am not sure if not having water for him is a good idea till he foes to bed...Well he is going to the vet tomorrow, so I will ask him,,,Thanks for letting me know that here will be a light at the end of the tunnel, lol
LOL! Sorry I can't think of anything to add.
Are you taking him out on the puppy routine?
as soon as he wakes up
after playing every time
after eating
pups usually pee at those times so if you do, it will make it easier to know his 'stance'
Don't make the mistake I did - I took Samantha to a spot easy for me. The grass is now ruined just as you walk into the backyard gate. She still loves that spot. Very hard to break that so go for the area you want him always to use in the future.
I would check out Max's private parts for wetness if I wanted to make sure he tinkled. :D
