Labradoodle & Goldendoodle Forum
Yes, they are still puppies. Yes, we walk them every single day and play and play and play and play. Yes we thought we had totally puppy proofed our dining room but somehow, our beaver doodles CHEWED their way into a cabinet and drug out, tore-up and chewed beyond recognition some of my linen napkins, a Longeburger basket and liner, and antique cookbook of my great grandmothers (with her writing in it) and of all things, a bottle of Elmer's glue...all in a 3 hour period.
When I opened the front door today, Penny was standing on the gate with one of the Longeberger liners in her mouth, all proud of herself and making happy, happy, wookie noises. Ginger knew right away that they were in BIG trouble and immediately ran for cover as if I was going to beat her or something. There they both stood, covered in glue and pieces of antique cookbook stuck all over them...I would have laughed if I hadn't been about to throw up. I don't know what to do. We've tried everything except selling them….CHEAP! Oh! And one more YES….They had plenty of toys to chew on. I guess it’s time to kennel them during the day. So sad though, we got two so that they would have each other and stay out of trouble. Instead, they are partners in crime on a mission to destroy my house one bite at a time.

Oh dear! I'm so sorry about your heirlooms!! Fortunately, we haven't had much doodle damage but our shepherd mix was terrible. In many dog breed books they classify some breeds (such as border collies) as "destructive if bored". We used to call our Dixie, "Dibs" (destructive if bored). She even pulled up a corner of linoleum and chewed it.
I think the reason that puppies are SO cute is that they are SO much trouble :-) It's hard to stay angry at those faces....
Wow! I'm so sorry to hear that you've had this experience with your Doodle puppies. I'm also surprised that so many others have had the same kind of experiences. That's hard to come home to. In defense of Doodles, I have to say that our Doodle, Higby, has never destroyed a single thing in the three year that we've had him. We got him as a puppy from the breeder and we've raised him to this day. I've always thought that raising puppies means you have expect behaviors that we'd be unhappy with, but that's never happened. I've often thought that it's as if Higby can read our minds. He does just what we ask of him and he's never chewed a single shoe, book, or clothing. We leave him in our car when we go into the a store or restaurant and he's perfectly contented to watch people passing or just nap while we're away. When he was a puppy, we crated him while we were gone and he was about nine months old before we left him free to roam in the house during our absence. So not "all" Doodles have a destructive side. Believe me, I've counted our blessings that Higby's been such an easy puppy to raise and train. I'm wondering if there aren't other Doodle owners out thre who've had our exerience with raising an almost intuitive Doodle.
