Charlie has a small abrasion on the side of his face.  It is located an inch below the back corner of his mouth.  It was probably the result of some wild dog play.

At first the other dogs were licking at it but that has stopped now.  I've washed it with an anti-bacterial soap and it seems to heal.  THEN, Charlie scratches at the scab with his back foot and we have to start the cycle all over again.  This has been going on since early march.

I hate to put a cone on the boy since he can go days without scratching it.  Any other ideas?

My first thought, too Joanne.  I remember seeing a horse trainer  take the upper lip and twist it while they were trying to do something with another part of the horse.  diversion.  of course the lip twist must have been uncomfortable, but a sock on his back leg would turn his attention to that area but not hurt.

my other thought- when I have a healing cold sore, I keep it supple with A&D ointment so it does not dry and crack.

Hope it all heals up soon!

Brilliant!  I'll probably have to duct tape one on to keep it from sliding off but that will just give him something to work on.  :)  And his nails will be covered.  I like this as a dual purpose solution.  LOL!

The liquid bandage and sock seem to be doing the trick!  He seems to actually like wearing the sock.  LOL!.  There's no accounting for doodle fashion sense.  :)

I looked at some itch relief spray in the pet aisle of the grocery store.  It was $10 and contained hydrocortisone - something I have at home.  I took a pass and will use the cream I have if needed.

The sore spot already looks much better.

Glad to hear it!

(Just as an aside, the reason I like the sprays as opposed to ointments or creams is that they dry quickly and don't rub off.)

I can understand that, Karen.  If I were looking for something to use long term, I'd consider that as well.

Great to hear!  Glad to hear the healing has begun and relief is on the way!

Glad to hear the sock and liquid bandage is working. The anti itch spray may still come in handy as it gets back to the scab stage of healing as that is the most itchy time. Also, the Animax is wonderful to have on hand for all kinds of sores.

Evidently Animax needs a prescription but I may ask about it.  The anti-itch cream didn't seem to help much.  I thin he feels the tightness of the scab, not so much itching.

I thought the sock was working but it only took a moment for the sock to come off and for Charlie to scratch at it again.  If not the foot, he found he could scratch it on the carpet.  So, now he is in a cone.  He is soooo pathetic.  He is just standing here with his head hung down.  He won't move or even lay down.  And the other dogs seem to be in solidarity with him, looking sad too!

Hopefully, this will just be a few days.

I hope so! Poor guy.
