Labradoodle & Goldendoodle Forum

My wife, Kris and I are happy parents to Devo.  He is a 2 year old (on March 1) Labradoodle with pumpkin/light brown eyes.  Thankfully we survived the puppy days as this was not my fist puppy but it was my wife's and Devo almost ended up with a one way ticket to Siberia on more then 1 occasion...lol...  He honestly does nothing wrong and while I have had standard poodles in the past he is  truly silly smart.  He loves going to the dog park (Hamden CT) but would much rather play with us while there if given the chance.

The only really "odd" things are: he does not climb stairs.  A few are ok but a flight is out of the question. Nor will he jump in and sometimes out of the car (even tho he absolutely loves going on car rides) But he will jump off our deck (3-4 stairs) or straight from a standing position easily 6 feet into the air.

Cheese is the ultimate persuader :)

I uploaded some recent pictures to the gallery...

What pretty eyes and a nice chocolate brown color.  Sounds like a pretty typical first couple years.  My Sophie would not do stairs until she was probably over two.  We don't have them in the house except one or two going out the back door so I never really thought about it.  Took her to the County fair and we were going to go up in the stands to sit and she wouldn't go.  Then she got till she would go up, but not down.  Finally, she has it mastered. Hopefully Devo will as well.

Devo is very handsome. I would work with him on the stairs since you never know when you will need it. My two learned to get up in the car by haviny someone coaxing the from one side while someone else offered treats from the opposite door. A simialr enticing hime with treats might work on the stairs.

First, Welcome to DK. second Devo is very handsome, and sounds like a perfect first dog to introduce your wife to dog ownership.
As for stairs, does he go up the 3-4 on your porch and are there many other stairs in your house? Reason I ask, is maybe he just needs to be exposed to a flight of stairs and trained to go up and down more than 3-4? Just guessing here.
The reference of him not getting in or out of cars made me smile, because our daughter's 80# doodle will not jump into our SUVs so he gets in the back seat cuz he can walk in.
She started helping him in from the time he was big enough to put his front paws on the back bumper or tailgate and he's been "trained" to wait for help ever since. Now that was fine when he was 30-40-50 pds but at 80 it's a bit back breaking.
What's funny, is he can do it when he wants to or if he's following my two into the car. Hummmmm. So makes me wonder, who is training whom here? So you know he can jump, since I have one who hops 6 ft in the air too, so height or having all four feet off the ground isn't the issue and as long as he isn't in any discomfort with climbing or jumping in/out of a car, I would probably bet he'll get it someday. Might take a bit of cheese, but he 'll do it.

Yes he does go up 3-4 steps and that is pretty much it. We do have a full flight in the house going up to the bedrooms he kind of just looks at them and walks away. We have a 19 year old cat who lives upstairs so we really haven't encouraged him to go up. I think once the cat passes, we will work on getting him to go up. In regards to climbing in the car (this is Steve's wife, Kris) I blame my husband!! He picks him up and puts him in the car!!!! hahaha he is 70lbs I can't pick him up. So he is basically a spoiled/stubborn pup :) I have coaxed him in with treats and that will work 50% of the time. A lot I know is consistency, my dear husband needs to stop picking him up. AND.......if we can't get him out of the car, guess who picks him up and brings him to the front door? hehe I think we all need training!

What a cute doodle! Welcome to DK! He looks a lot like a female that my breeder from Otis MA kept in her program for breeding and i am wondering where you got him--maybe they are Siblings?

She is the same age too! Don't they look alike??

We got him from a breeder in North Haven Ct. Parents were Coda & Bailey. They do look very much alike!! :)

Hi Devo.  You are a cutie and will like meeting all of your new DK friends.
