I NEED all of you ladies to help me out here (o.k. guys I'll listen to you too). #54 is coming up this June. I haven't colored my hair in 7 months, thought it might be time to go natural - like who am I kidding right?  Plus now I have Rooney's groomer to pay for so giving up a hairdresser seemed o.k.  But right now I look like I'm homeless - it is only about 1/3 grown out. What do I do - color it, cut it all off really short or just gut it out knowing that I'll be a foxy white down the road. Help.

I think we need a picture!  For me the decision on whether or not to go grey depends on the color of your grey hair.  Some people have a beautiful grey and others it isn't so pretty!  If it were me I would have to cut it short probably (but then I wear mine short) but I would have trouble with the longer length and growing the grey out!  So far I've been able to get by just doing highlights.  I would love to go more blonde, but I don't want to get into a "roots" situation so I just stick with highlights and lowlights.  If you are going to go short, the perfect time is coming up with the heat you will have in Florida for the next many months.

I "went natural" some years back, and have no regrets, although I wish I'd inherited my dad's gorgeous snow white instead of my mom's salt & pepper. At my 40th HS reunion, I was one of the only women without dyed hair. I know a lot of people think it makes you look older, but that's only to people who look at haircolor only and don't pay attention to faces. An old wrinkled face is an old wrinkled face, no matter what color hair is around it, lol.

The way to grow it out painlessly is to have highlights done instead of coloring the whole head. That's what I did.

Sometimes I see groups of women who are obviously much older than I am, out at restaurants, and I often wonder if they still color their hair because they're in denial, because honestly, most of them have hair colors that do not exist in nature, lol. I personally think that dyed hair on a women of a certain age looks kind of like a really extreme comb-over on a bald man; you want to say, "What's the point? Who are you fooling?"

Of course, sometimes it might just be that it makes the person feel better about about themselves, and it's really for that and not because of other people's opinions, in which case it's great. But I do know one woman in her late 70s whose husband insists she stay pale blonde because it makes him feel old to have a wife with grey hair. Poor lady, too late for a divorce, I guess.

picture please...i have the same issues...my hair can be brown, grey and blonde all at the same time.
From the pics I've seen of you, you have straight blond hair and a youthful, pretty face. I totally think you can pull off going grey and look fabulous. I definately agree with Karen's idea of highlights to get through that "akward phase". I am facing the same delima (#51) but I have dark curly hair and I'm afraid it would have that wirey look.

Jane, I have seen you in person, so I can say this based on first-hand experience.  I took the liberty of pasting my favorite picture of you & Rooney below so everyone can see without having to pop over to your page.  My hair is probably as gray as yours is, but only in the front.   Since my hair is dark, I would look like a skunk trying to grow it out.  I turned 55 in January and have been thinking about going natural, but I would have to either color my hair gray or wear a wig for 6 months until I could cut it off.

I personally think you would look great in short hair.  So my vote is go natural and cut it short!

Oh my goodness...you're gorgeous. You'll look fabulous whatever you do.

My opinion as a former hairdresser is to cover up the gray. You are to pretty to make u look older. No way!! Maybe ten or fifteen years down the road! I wouldn't go much shorter either because of the shape of your face. Please cover gray u are to cute!!!!
I was born a blonde, I live a blonde and I'll dye to be a blond. :>) I dye to cover the grey, also hate dealing with the root issue but for now it's the way it gonna be. Jane you are lovely and you have to pick what makes you feel good.
since your hair is light, I guess it wouldn't seem as drastic than if I were to let it go... I hear ya' about cutting YOUR hairdresser appts. for Rooney.  How' bout doing it yourself.  I do and it's pretty easy and SOOOOO much cheaper.  If I can do it with my long hair - so can YOU!  I had an aunt who had light hair and she let it all go gray, but once the gray was all in - it DID look gray and she was very youthful looking too.  so I guess I am trying to politely tell you , I think I would color it -  myself.  No matter what you do - YOU need to be happy and comfortable!  Ronney's gonna' love you no matter what you do!  (But - I can tell you that Tori definitely does NOT like when I wear my glasses! LOL)

I say "Rock the Gray" with highlights....if you don't like it go more highlights and then if you don't like it more...you are cute and can pull of the gray cause it is not ugly gray.

I don't know about you but whenever I color my hair the first place the color leaves is the gray so I stopped...people still think I have highlights and I haven't colored in 1-1/2 years. I do have gray but it's the white gray and I have lighter color hair.

Jane, I really like you with longer hair, so I wouldn't be a fan of cutting it really short.  I have no idea what my natural color is at this point.  I've been coloring for so many years that I'm just not even sure.  I'll probably keep coloring till my dying day.  I think it's all about what makes you feel good, and only you can decide that.
yep I agree we need a photo I am 53 this July and I colour my hair I was dark with white throughout we call it hollywood blonde started to feel old and dowdy so I had it coloured Blonde and love it now just need to shed the menopause weight (HO HUM) there is always something that needs work like an old car. You need to do what makes you feel good and also depends on the sort of grey and where it is, is it all through or just here and there I can't wait till mine is all over oh just saw your pic your hair is a beautiful colour just have a nice style cut wish mine was that colour I wouldn't colour
