I am so shook up I can barely type. We were out on our a.m. walk when suddenly this dog got out of his yard and attacked JD. I had to drop his leash, he was trapped. JD put up a fight but he's handicapped by his ruptured disc, and he fell. The other dog was over him down on the ground, I was screaming and trying to kick the other dog, I don't even know exactly what happened, my brain just shut down and it's a blur, it all happened so fast, but the dog was off of him by the time the owners came out. I was mostly worried about JD's back and didn't even know he was bitten until we got home. He has a puncture wound with a tear under his eye (thank God he missed the eye itself) and a big scrape across the top of his head. We're just back from the ER. They cleaned it and gave me pain meds and antibiotics...just what he needs with his IBD. I may not give him the pain meds, but I have to give him the amoxicillin, which is certain to upset his stomach. And I have to apply warm compresses to the wound under his eye several times a day for a few days so it doesn't scab up too fast. I am so upset I'm shaking. That dog got out of that yard so fast and so easily, they may as well not even have had a fence.
Going to pick up his amoxicillin now. Poor JD.

Thanks, Elizabeth!
So glad to hear that JD is getting better, and, also happy to hear that the attack did not change JD's friendly disposition. Wish all pet owners could be as kind, loving and responsible as you and others here on DK.
Thank you, Adrienne.
I was reviewing the posts and saw the pictures you posted of Jack's wounds. Yesterday, we were all so relieved that the bite missed the eye, but in reality, we should have realized the luck was in missing dear Jack's great big doodle nose. I am sure in our shock, we forgot the most important doodle body part. A scratch on dear Jack's nose would have meant severe retaliation from over 10,000 people. Now that might have been a problem.....
LOL, Nancy!
Karen, I am just seeing this now and I'm so sorry that this happened. I hope you and JD are both doing better. Quincy was attacked a few weeks ago and ended up with a small tear on his ear but no other ill effects. It has made me more nervous around other dogs and I go out of my way to avoid dogs that I don't know. It's funny that when I was thinking about getting a dog I wanted one that was big enough to protect himself and me, I didn't know I was going to end up having to protect us both. ">)
Thanks, Donna. It's too bad that we even have to worry about protecting ourselves and our dogs while out taking a walk.
We are both doing better. He saw the vet today while he was in getting his B12 shot, and they said we can discontinue the antibiotics after tonight...yay! Four less capsules to have to force down his throat every day!
Thats great news Karen! I guess his wounds must be looking much better or they wouldn't do that right?
I think so. :)
