I got my Doodle, Dugan, from a rescue in December and he is 3 years old and I have no information on his background. The other day I took Dugan to a lake to play ball and let him swim. We had been to this lake before and there had been geese with older babies present and Dugan never paid any attention to them, but this visit my sister was with me and her Maltese was bound and determined to catch a goose that was twice his size. They dogs swam after the geese and they got away from them except for one baby that got seperated from the others. Dugan caught the baby and had it in his mouth! I was in a panic, I know this is his natural instinct but, I didn't want him to kill the baby goose! Much to my amazment all I had to do was yell, "Dugan, LEAVE IT!" one time and Dugan released the goose and swam back to me and the baby returned to it's parents!!!  I was so proud of him!

I wish I knew all the commands that he has been taught by his previous owner. I have discovered that he knows sit, shake, down, drop it and now leave it! I can't imagine why anyone would have gotten rid of such a great dog! I believe that he has been abused by a man in the past because he is very leary of men, but he is slowly learning to trust men. My Dugan Doodle is the BEST!!!

What a wonderful dog...Aen't these doodles just the best!!!...Dugan sounds like a wonderful gift to you and you are his wonderful Mom...I guess you could say how lucky for both of you.  He is adorable....hugs to both of you...

That was a pretty good test of the "leave it" command!  I would say if he would do that, he would do a "leave it" for anything.  Great job of responding in a panic.

Dugan sounds so much like my Jackdoodle! I adopted him at 14 months old, but he was also very leery of men and showed signs of having been roughly treated by them. He, too, knew many commands including leave it and drop it. His house manners were so perfect, he could be left alone with the run of the house from the third day I had him, with no problems. Never had an accident, never destroyed anything, never went into the garbage, never counter surfed, never chased the cat, and the list goes on. Very undersocialized, afraid of his own shadow, but a very sweet, easy-to-live-with guy.

One day we were taking a casual walk (lots of stopping and sniffing) when I noticed that JD was a little too involved with something on the ground. I looked and he had found a tiny baby rabbit and had picked it up in his mouth1 I said "Jack, drop it!" and he set the little guy down unharmed!

Brag away! Our guys had some bad luck starting out, but now they are where they belong, with people who appreciate how great they are!

Jack hit the jackpot when he found you, and vice-versa!! I love reading your little stories about him. What a gentle giant he must be!

He is, Doris. He's my heart dog. :)

Yeah, brag away! Thats awesome. Way to go Dugan!!!!!!

This is such a wonderful story.  Hoorah for the rescue Doodles, Hoorah for Dugan!

Yay for Dugan! Leave it is such an important command, and he seems to have it down well. :-)

Dugan is one handsome and smart Dood!   It's wonderful that you and Dugan found one another....it's clear that you are crazy about this guy.

Way to go Dugan! And best wishes to a proud Mum... You deserve it.
What a smart boy. I am so glad you were albe to rescue him and enjoy him. Keep on bragging, he is great.
