So I have been having a discussion about Labradors and Labrador retrievers? They are the same thing aren't they? Or have I got this totally wrong?

The name of the breed is Labrador Retriever. Some people call them "Labs" or "Labradors". There is no separate breed that's just called "Labrador".

Hi there thanks for that! Doubted myself for a second lol! Now I can say I am 100% sure thanks very much for taking the time to answer!
This post makes me smile because I had a great aunt when I was younger that would argue with anyone that they were different breeds. Glad to know she's not the only one :)

I've also heard the term "Golden Labs" which just gets my goat. The only accepted colors are yellow, black, and chocolate. Though, some people like to call the yellow 'golden.' To me, though, the name 'golden lab' implies a mix between a golden retriever and a lab.

But yes, Labrador, Labrador Retriever, and Lab are all the same breed.

Yep, Lab, Labrador and Labrador Retriever are interchangeable names. There are, however, two different categories of Labrador Retrievers: English and American. Note:  The AKC doesn't separate the two Lab versions.

Here is Shadow, my daughter's English Lab...

English Labs are blockier and usually shorter legged while the American style Labs are taller and usually slimmer.

However, I would be willing to bet that there are many Labs out there carrying both English and American Labrador genes...

My yellow lab was half American and half English.

This was her at 13 years old. She was a lot happier there than she looks in this pic, lol.
