About 2 weeks ago Lincoln started limping and holding up his paw.  He wasn't eating very well either - which is rare for him!  We took him to the vet and she did some xrays to see if it was a growth plate issue.  Gave him some antiimflamatory med.  She sent the xrays to be viewed and no growth plate problems!. she said he problby sprained it running around ( he is only 8 month s old, so is still crazy sometimes)  He got better but a few days later started limping again!   Went to the vet again this morning and she did blood work and found out it was lyme even though he had been vaccinated.  We also use flea & tick meds, but he did have about 5-6 ticks last fall when he was a pup. The meds are paid for by the maker of the vaccine, so they were free for us.  I feel bad that we didn;t know sooner.  Not her fault either.  He should be better within 24 hours.  So don't rule out lyme even if vaccinated!

I'm sorry to hear this. I hope the meds do the trick!

As a side note, one reason I buy my HW and flea/tick preventatives from the vet is that manufacturer's guarantee and reimbursement for treatment. Supposedly, that doesn't apply if you buy the prevents anywhere but from a licensed veterinarian.

Never really thought of that.  We got them from the vet since his weight was changing,  she would just sell us one at a time.  The cost was pretty reasonable anyway. We just got a 4 month supply of HW and flea/tick since at 8 months he is within the over 50 lbs. weight range now.  Scary , how dangerous those darn ticks can be to both humans and animals!

I wasn't aware that they did this! Can you explain a little more? Like does this mean if they get anything related to something the preventative should cover the company covers everything? Thankfully I haven't ran into this yet but this is good to know!

Some of the products like Frontline and Heartgard have a "customer satisfaction" guarantee. It's on the websites and usually printed on the package.  If they get whatever the product is supposed to protect against (Heartworms, tick-borne disease, etc), they pay for some or all of the cost of treatment, but only if you buy the products from a licensed vet.

That's great to know! Thanks a lot. I have been buying them from the vet but was planning on switching to buying online or in a pet store once they stopped growing but I won't be doing that anymore!
Oh dear, I am sorry to hear this. Will he be better for good once the meds work? We don't have Lyme here ( New Zealand) so I don't know much about it.

The vaccine is pretty useless--it does reduce symptoms but here in prime Lyme country (Eastern NY) my vet doesn't even suggest it anymore-it gives you a false sense of security---people are surprised when the dog had Lyme even though he was vaccinated--if you know the vaccine does not work, then it is not a surprise when the dog gets Lyme and you are more likely to test for it, so in a way, the vaccine is dangerous false advertising.

So glad he was tested for it and is on the mend--believe me, if a good vaccine was discovered for Lyme, the humans would all be getting it!

The vet says he should be fine. He has to take the pills for a long time. I think we caught it early but I hope he is ok with no long term effects.

yes, the antibiotics work well--he WILL  be fine! I have had several dogs with it and they turn around in a day--the danger is when it goes undiagnosed.

By the way, I have had it twice (with lingering fibromyalgia as a result) and hubby has had it twice--most of my neighbors and their dogs have had it at least once! We are under siege!

My pup had Lyme when she was less than a year old. She had the vaccination and had been on Advantix. Ticks are the only part of having a dog that I don't like. :(
