I just came back from the vet because my normally rambunctious 1 1/2 year old ALD had a 103.8 degree fever this afternoon (normal is around 101-101.5 according to vet) and was very lethargic.
I had been off at work all day but when I got home my hubby said she never really left her bed all day. She had eaten but not with her usual enthusiasm. No vomiting or diarrhea though.
Luckily, I was able to get her to the vet for something to bring the fever down and some antibiotics, just in case. All blood tests and tests for tick-borne disease came back negative (phew!) but the vet confirmed that there have been H1N1 cases in dogs lately. I had read about that also. Just thought everyone would want to be aware of it.
Now that her fever is down, Lyric is a bit more active, although she still seems to have much less energy than normal. I have been told to take her temp. each morning and give her baby aspirin if it comes up again.

Ginny-thanks for explaining to me the dummy about taking Lyric's temp.! I thought that maybe you had some sort of ear thermometer or something like that. But it was just the good ol fashioned method..up the back end. I had heard that there noses get hot when they have a fever and their belly too. So glad she is feeling better and thanks for the info.
Yes, Lyric is MUCH better--her old self again! I am glad I tested her to be sure that it was nothing tick related. I have had dogs with Lyme disease in the middle of the winter, so it wouldn't surprise me if that happened. I use Advantix, but you never know. My other dog had the "sneezies" right before Christmas that we solved with Benadryl. I don't think the two are related.
I am sure Lyric didn't have the swine flu, but its good to know that dogs can get it.
I hope Lyric is feeling better now thank you so much for the information I think I will get some baby asprin and a thermometer just to have around the house.
Great news that she is better. Sometimes dogs just get a simple cold, just like we do! :)
The Canine for of H1N1 is H3N8...
