Labradoodle & Goldendoodle Forum
My 9-week-old f1 goldendoodle has a 2-inch "tail" of hair growing from his willy (trying to be PC). Because he is white, it looks like a long yellow paintbrush. I'd really like to give it a trim, but I don't want to deface his manhood if it's supposed to have hair.
Thoughts?

The hair at the tip of the penis is supposed to be trimmed, leaving just a little "wick" which directs the stream of urine away from his body. If you leave it long, the dried urine can cause problems including infections and even difficulty urinating as the dried urine causes the hair to stick together. Trimming the hair around the privates is referred to as a sanitary trim. You can ask your groomer or your vet to do it if you are uncomfortable doing it yourself. But it does need to be done, two inches is way too long.
LOL.... I always trim around Oliver's "willy", I like to keep it nice and neat. He is my first male and he is very hairy, but I always kept my females trimmed too.
We trim Remi's all the time... usually when he is sleepy or snoozing a bit. Doesn't take long and he never has had a bad reaction to it.
I am sorry, Jen, and it speaks to my immaturity that I am giggling :) Vern's willy has never had this problem, but I say trim it.....LOL!
I cut Luca's hair close to the end of his penis very carefully. I don't worry about wicks since he squats.
I trim Darwin's regularly.
I didn't even know this was an issue! Am I dumb or what? My short haired dogs never grew fur there and my doodles are groomed regularly, so obviously, while "someone" takes care of this issue, I have been kept in the dark! :-) I say trim it!
Giggling here - we are waaaaaaay too much the same!
I have learned something here. Haley is my second male dog. I never trimmed Cole's "whizzer" hair and there never was a problem. The hair on the end of Haleys "whizzer" is a good 3 inches long. Every time he pees he washes. Never stiff. He has done this since the day we brought him home at 8 weeks.
I think JD is a slob. He doesn't clean himself at all, unless you call wiping your face on the sofa after eating "cleaning". He is my first male and I had no idea about this until his dermatologist saw that the opening of his penis was very irritated and on the verge of infection from dried urine, etc. and advised me to keep that hair trimmed.
Banjo cleans his muzzle thoroughly on my sofa and chairs after every meal. UGH!
