I am a pest with all my questions, but I'm going to ask them anyway. :) First off, Toby sleeps in our room, in his crate. Will he be able to get up the stairs the night he is neutered? He's not a mini - he's probably between 45 and 50 pounds right now, so carrying him up would be, at the very least, difficult. The vet has told me the dogs don't go home with a collar. I'm hoping Toby will leave his stitches alone. I assume the first night he will be groggy enough not to bother. Some of you have mentioned putting a pair of boy's undies on him. What size would those be? And backwards, I assume, so his tail would come through the fly? :) Or a t-shirt was mentioned as well - again I assume it would have to be a smaller one - possibly a little boy's t-shirt.

Our day is Tuesday, Feb. 24. I'm not looking forward to it, but I'm trying really hard not to obsess about it.

I don't know anything about neutering as my Allie is a girl, but she was just spayed and luckily we can enter our home through the garage downstairs because we were told to not let her go up stairs. We stayed downstairs for 2 days with her and then when we ALL (including the dog) got stir crazy we did let her go up the stairs. The first night she was so groggy that I don't think she could have gone up stairs. Our Vet doesn't send the dogs home with the collar either but we ended up having to go out and get one. She wouldn't leave her stitches alone. We did end up letting her go without the collar once she learned that she was not allowed to lick her stitches. I think the vet should send them home with the collars. Our vet did have them for sale - which we had to go back and buy for $27.00, but when we went to Petco we found the SAME one for $7.00!!!!! So maybe you should get one first just incase.

Good luck!
We tried to keep Grover downstairs the first night and had moved his crate. He was so miserable and confused, that we quickly placed the crate back upstairs and attempted to carry him the second night. He was much more comfortable.
We used a size L boys boxers and also a larger pair that I had to pin, with a large diaper pin, to make the waist smaller. We also placed a small T shirt on him just to be safe. He kept boxers on for at least the first week, but they absolutely got us through and did the trick. I only took them off at the door and they went right back on when he came in. I did allow him a minimal amount of licking prior to putting the boxers back on, only because it seemed like a natural process as the wound healed.....no licking at all for the first few days and nothing obsessive.

Good luck and don't worry...it will all be behind you quickly and you'll be able to "read" Toby's needs as you go along......I think all dogs are different.
Have a great weekend,

when Nougat was neutered he was fine, he jumped on the bed without any problem and left his stitches well alone. he was surprisingly good!!! we had no problems atall, he healed well and stitches came out easily. Anaesthetic had no ill effects either. good luck!

Arf - Jennings was neutered a few months ago (he is a Mini Goldendoodle), but DID get sent home with the plastic cone. The first night I heard him banging into everything (he normally sleeps in his crate, but he couldn't even get INTO the crate with the cone, and I figured with the cone on, he couldn't do anything naughty!) and he HATED the cone. Even with it on, he was trying to get to his stitches. On Day 3, I discovered the "Comfy Cone" which is soft and can be folded back on its rim so the dog can eat/drink. The Comfy Cone was a lifesaver, and when Jennings banged into doorways, there was no thud... and no nicks on the paint! Maybe just leave Toby sleeping wherever next week on the first night, and see how it goes?
