Labradoodle & Goldendoodle Forum

We had an F1b Labradoodle for 12 years. He had a curly coat, was low allergy and low shedding. We are being offered a multigen Labradoodle. Is there greater risk of allergies/shedding with a multigen Labradoodle?

That is impossible to answer as not all F1Bs or multigens are created equal--the fact that you got a curly low shed F1b is not proof that they are all that way---and some can seem very un-poodle-y!! Same with multigens--even Australian Labradoodles can be shedders with straighter coats...you would need to see the dog and determine the coat type--it is very easy to see if the pup will curl at a fairly early age and pulling gently on the hairs at the tail end will help determine if it will be much of a shedder.

There is really no general rule about multigens or F1bs as far as allergies, shedding or coat type.

Thank you. We had a curly coat F1b for 12 years. I've heard mixed messages about multigens. Your reply confirms my desire to request a curly coat pup.

What generation? Second and third generations are the least reliable for coat and multi-generational of 4+  are the most reliable.  I see Ginny responded to you.  Her information is much more reliable than mine.  One of my doodles is a 7th generation Australian labradoodle who doesn't shed and seems allergy friendly, however his coat is very poodley.  In contrast to your f1, my f1 sheds tons and I suspect is not allergy friendly.

Thank you. I do not know how many generations at the moment, but I will ask. This is the breeder went to 13 years ago. We had a spectacular F1b and we were hoping for a similar experience (temperament, genes, low shed, low allergy).

I would ask your breeder especially since you had a good experience prior.  When I decided to get an ALD 5 years ago, I did a lot of research and then decided the ALD was the best choice for us.  I then researched breeders and researched the dame and sire of specific litters because I had a certain body type and coat in mind. I do know that Charlie & Beau are directly from Australian lines and I have a copy of their lineage.  Neither shed and I have a couple of friends that are allergic to dogs - but they do not have a reaction to our doodles.  All that being said, I agree with Ginnie and others that there is no guarantee and so many people do not seem to know where there doodles came from beyond the dame and sire, but it was important to me.  I am looking forward to seeing homecoming photos of your new little one when you finally decide.  Good luck.

Thank you for the information. We are moving ahead with the breeder we used in 2002 and welcoming a new chocolate Labradoodle into our family. I'll post photos later. As long as the dog is healthy, everything else will be icing on the cake.

So true!

Congratulations, Corrine.

Good luck and post pictures when you get. We all love looking at puppies.

We went with a breeder who does almost exclusively multigen for our 'doodle. He's wavy, not curly, no allergic reaction by our allergy-prone family. What appealed to me is the breeder has been developing the lines for temperament as well as other features, which is going to be more thorough with the experience of bloodlines more than one gen deep.
