Our Doodle Allie was diagnosed today with Lyme disease - I searched the discussion topics in here and didn't find much on it. I'm not quite sure why or when this happened. We vaccinated her for it because we are in an area where there are a lot of ticks. I'm not sure why it didn't work for her???? We were also very diligent in giving her the flea and tick medication monthly.

Our Vet is on vacation this week so we had to see his "fill in." The Vet that we saw noticed the symptoms immediately. She acted like this was common and didn't fret at all. She took Allie's blood and had us leave and come back 45 minutes later to pick her up. When we came back a Tech told us the news that Allie is positive for Lyme (she didn't seem worried either). I'm not understanding this. Is it nothing to worry about? They put her on Doxycycline (sp) antibiotics to help her get the infection out - but the disease will be in her body forever. They are also sending her blood work to a lab to see how high the level is, so that we can do another blood draw in 6 months to see if the levels have gone down. I don't quite understand why they were so unconcerned, because when I think of Lyme disease I think of a horribly painful life. Apparently it must be different for dogs?

This does answer our question as to why she is such a drama queen - she isn't!!! She actually WAS in pain all along - my poor puppy :'(

Just wondering if anyone has experience with Lyme disease that might be able to help me understand????

Yes - I believe that is why Allie got sick that one time - because I gave the pill to her on an empty stomach. The Vet told us that we didn't need to give them with food - but obviously we do. Allie takes it well with Peanut Butter - we are very lucky for Peanut Butter!!!! I don't know what I would do without it!

Allie is doing better and better everyday! Thanks!

Aww.Bonne Bouche just got diagnosed with Lymes today. he had no symptoms and was in for his annual, we requested a Snap Test because of all the ticks he's had this year. Most of which we've caught fairly small. This is a very helpful thread. How are things going now, 3 years later?

awe :(  I forgot about my frantic Lyme post!  Lucky you caught Bonne Bouche's before symptoms appeared.  It was terrible watching her in so much pain.  After Allie's 30 days on doxycycline, her numbers went way down, and has not gone back up.  She gets her blood drawn once a year.  I will have to look and see what the exact number is but her Vet is very happy with the number.  She is doing wonderful!!!  I'm so happy for Bonne Bouche that you caught it before the pain :)

My dog  was diagnosed with Lyme about three weeks ago. She got the Lyme vaccine and has been on Advantix since she was 12 weeks old. She was listless, not eating and her nose was dry so I brought her to the vet. He said that the blood test is on a scale of 1-100 with 30+ showing active Lyme in the system. Our puppy had a score of 80. I felt so bad. She is on the Doxycycline for 30 days. I put the pills in a slice of turkey. She is actually great about taking them. The vet and vet tech were also really low key about the Lyme diagnosis. Apparently there is a high percentage of pets with Lyme in our area. He said to bring her back in 6mo to recheck her blood. I really was so upset about the diagnosis I didn't really ask too many questions about long term effects.

I'm sorry your puppy has to go through this.

So sorry to hear about Allie-hope it's a one time thing that is controlled fast!

There seems to be pretty  many doodles getting Lymes, scary.

How's Allie doing?
