I am thinking of naming my dog (either male or female), not sure which gender I'll get yet, an unusual name. Not so unusual, but more uncommon. I love books, so I was trying to think of character names from some of my favorite books. Everyone I talk to tells me to name a dog something more silly, not as serious. I'm conflicted!

Also, according to this recent NY Times article, you shouldn't give a dog a "person's" name but I love them for dogs! They said to stay away from consonants too..

Here are my choices so far:
Males: Beau (does it sound too much like no?), Milo, Frances, Dodger (Oliver Twist)
Females: Dagny (Atlas Shrugged) Dorrit (Little Dorrit)
Phoebe (catcher in the rye)

I'm really loving Frances for either a male of female. It's a version of Franny from Franny & Zooey, a version of Franz from Swiss Family Robinson & the Sound of Music, & the author of The Secret Garden.

I like Dodger & Dorrit too. I really want a name from a Dickins novel that isn't the common ones (like Oliver)

Any literary names you all can think of?

I'll have to think about this.  I do love Dodger though!

Oh dear, Dodger was the dog that used to live next door to me. He was mean, and NEVER stopped barking !

But don't let that sway you !! LOL

I feel that certain names just fit "DOODLES"!!!! I LOVE people names for dogs and Especially Doodles. Beau doesn't sound like a Doodle name to me, but Milo and Phoebe are cute. Although Milo is very popular!!! I always say you have to call the name out loud as if your calling them in from the yard. Some names just don't Flow in my opinion. Good Luck~

When do you get your dog?  I think you will know when you see him/her :)

My daughter's dog is named Grendel--which suits him!  He's not a doodle, though.

I always think 2 consonants.  I had a cat named Ratman, after Scatman Crothers, a dog named Xena, a dog named Aztec. Go original I say!

Duh, that would be syllables, not consonants.

Alice (Alice in Wonderland)

Oliver(Dickens)

Cathy (wuthering heights)

Emma (Jane Austin)

Peter (Pan)

Scarlet (O'Hara)

Jo (Little Women)

Bronte ( whichever sister you like)

Sebastian (Brideshead Revisited)

(Mr) Chips (goodbye Mr Chips)

that's just a very few...

Good ones Nicky!

I agree Impressive Nicky!!! :)))

Why not use Franz, it's a great name and I would use it for a boy or girl. I like boy/girl type names. My Finnley is a girl, and before her I had Beasley, she also was a girl. Swiss would be cool too.

For the longest time I had planned on my next female dog to be named Chudleigh, but when I saw Finnley, I had to make a new plan. Her look just didn't fit the bill.

Good luck !

Love the name Franz!! But that's mostly because I love love LOVE the band Franz Ferdinand (an Indie Rock/Post Brit-pop band)  :)  For that reason, Franz would totally win my vote!
