Do you think that is enough? I guess not because he's still going.
He doesn't get food 2 hours before bed. Our breeder kept food out all day for the puppies so we've continued to do that, but we remove it 2 hours before we go to bed and he goes in his crate.
The reason you are having this problem now is because your puppy learned that going poop in the crate was an option. Now you are going to have to go back and retrain him.
I would put this puppy on a 3Xs a day feeding schedule with the last one being no later than 6:00p.m. The food should be picked up by 6:15p.m. You should have a final poop in the day, typically between 9:30p.m. and 11:30p.m. If you don't, you need to "match" him.
Next, as others have said, you need to make the crate space so small that your dog can only stand up, turn tightly around and lie down. I would also remove all bedding from the crate.
Thanks. That makes sense. We did remove his bedding a few days ago when he just kept eating it.
I will try all these suggestions tonight.
Something else you might try.....dogs won't go to the bathroom where they eat. I fed Lucy in her crate or on occasion would just throw a handful of food in there. She never pooped in there again, unless it was out of her control and she had diarrhea.
And about the feeding. Little puppies feed on demand. Yours shouldn't be eating whenever he feels like it. Mine eat at 5:00 and whatever is left by 6:00 gets picked up. This guarantees I get a bowl movement before our 9:00 bed time.
And when I was feeding them 2 or 3 times a day, they had 30 minutes to eat, and it got picked up.
