Labradoodle & Goldendoodle Forum

Ok I've decided to start this thread because there are a lot of issues we will need to address with help Jake adjust to a new life. I'm just going to post here with questions. I've got obedience stuff down I can handle that. But there is alot of other stuff. I'll just post here any maybe one of you wise doodle lovers can help. I can try to post in food, and grooming but so any things are interrelated so I'm going to use this thread as a catch all and if mods want me to separate I can. :)

Issue first and foremost, the diet. We feed one of the foods recommended on here. Jakes current diet (what the owners been feeding him) is dry purina puppy food, and equal parts peas, corn, rice, cooked ground beef and water all mixed together. Okayyyyyyyyy. Iknow how to move a dog from 1 food to another slowly but how in the world do i handle this? Poor Jake has terrible runs! I'm taking him to the vet early this week to check for uti, stool, blood work etc. but how do I begin the transition to my food with all these other ingredients?

Thanks,I'll tackle other issues as we go along. I fear grooming wise he will need a shave. His belly, ears, and legs are horribly matted.

Thanks everyone.

I'm so happy for you and your family!  And such a wonderful vet........

Welcome home Jake!

What fabulous news, Jen!  A healthy Jake and and for sure "furever home"!  I am so happy for you all!  I am very impressed with your vet!  What a wonderful thing she did for you!  Give that sweet boy Jake a big doodle hug for me!

The best news to hear before I sign off. I'm going to sleep now. Up early to hop on two planes in order to catch up with the Doodle cruisers! Welcome home Jake. X

Nicky, I hope you have a marvelous time. I know some of your fellow cruisers and they are wonderful folks.

Wow - someone was looking over Jake when you came along!  So glad everyone is working out and Jake deserves your family - I'm sure he will be as devoted to you and  your family as you are to him!!!  How did you come across Jake?  Did I miss this part of the story?

Almost forgot, how is the water consumption/obsession and peeing issue? Did the vet have any opinions about that?

Karen,
Well it's starting to take care of itself. Waters now left out all the time and he's regulating his consumption just like Brisby. As is with the food. Well both now eat 2 x a day. Before, with just Brisby it was graze all day but not with Jake here. They have seperate elevated eating areas and they both go to their own space for breakfast and dinner. The peeing, well I still take them out every 2-3 hours (because of Jake) and the vet said I might just need to retrain potty behavior as I would a pup first learning. He did pee in his crate when we first got him but last night he whined about 2:45 am and I immediately got him out and took him outside and he went. No accidents in his crate after I pt him back in. i immediately took them out at 6:00 am when i wake up. Brisby can hold it all night and I think technically jake can as well but that crate was his prison. We just need some redirecting so I am acting like he's that new pup you get and need to teach the rules to, kwim?

This sounds perfect. I am sure that between you and Brisby, the water/pee issues will disappear.

Jenn D ~ Tears of happiness as I read Jake's story.  He is one of the very lucky ones in finding such a wonderful forever family and home!  Major kudos to you!

I LOVE a happy ending! I've been sharing your story and it just makes people smile!

Just finished reading all 14 pages. Emotional roller coaster! So happy , no, estactic, that Jake has found his true Guardian Angels in your family. It certainly sounds as if he is back on the road to becoming a healthy, lovable Doodle. Bless you!
