There are many discussions on DK regarding boy vs girl doodles and bottom line is there is no absolute answer. Seems to come down to the personality you are looking for and what sex that personality presents in that particular litter. The breeder is probably best able to guess which puppy fits your personality traits and whether it's a male or female won't matter.
Next it just seems personal preferences in regards to the sex as well. But for those of us that have one or the other or both sexes (like we do) , you will get as many different answers are there are different doodles and owners. Which is in the 10K's at this point! Good luck in choosing.
That's what I felt as well! Just have lots of people telling me many different things!
I'm so excited for my little one and no matter what will love them to death!
Yes, it does appear that everyone will have an opinion as to which gender is better than the other, depending on their own experiences. I honestly think if I didn't know what the genders were of my two, I would have no idea what they were by their temperaments. My breeder choose both of mine by what I asked for and got it perfect both times. One has a little more "quirks" than the other, but as far as calmness, energy levels, affection, playfulness and even sizes, she got every item 100% spot on. So basically if you trust your breeder enough to buy a puppy from her, trust her enough to help you decide on "the one" for you.
I would pick personality above all else and everything else will fall into place. If your breeder can offer their input and give advise I think thats the best! My breeder picked the puppies for us (my first dog I got with her I had 7th pick per say), we gave her a "wish list" and a little bit about ourselves and lives and she matched us up. I had wanted boys because I grew up with girls and decided to be different but then got matched up to a boy and could not have been happier. When I picked up my second doodle I was first pick of the litter (meaning she gave her advise and I agreed lol) and when I went to pick up Moose I met his siblings and they all seem so cute and perfect. Without help from our breeder I would have not been able to pick logically because it's hard when cute babies are crawling all over you! Good luck! Be sure to post some pictures when you do decide!
A lot of the best breeders usually do the choosing themselves, with the guidance you've provided. Or if there are 2-3 with similar temperaments then they might ask you for your favorite. But at 1 week of age there is no information to go on. Breeders who do actual 'temperament testing' do it at exactly 7 weeks. A good breeder might have an idea about which is best suited for which family (based on what the family has told the breeder it wants and any gender/coat/color wishes).
When I chose my Rosco (who is almost 10 years old now) I had originally wanted a cream female. But the litter was small, only 4 pups, and one female was HYPER and the other was shy. Both were deal breakers for me. On the other hand the two boys had more of the middle of the road temperaments and how could I resist the HUGE RED boy that looked different than all the others? I couldn't. So I chose him. I guess my advice is to wait, find out what they are like and compare that to what you want in a pup.
Doesn't really matter as to sex. It is more your preference. I grew up with mostly female dogs and happen to have males now.
I've had both male and female dogs, and I really don't think sex matters much at all....as others have already said it's really all about temperament and having that fit with your life style. As for what you should get to prepare, many breeders prepare a list. At a minimum, you'll need a crate, grooming tools, a collar and leash, water and food dishes, a few toys. I also bought a soft washable bed that I put inside the crate and one that I kept outside the crate for teaching "place". You'll want a harness for the car (or a traveling crate). You're probably going to have to wait to get food since you'll want to transition slowly from what the breeder is feeding. Some people like using an ex-pen to restrict the puppy inside the house during housebreaking. I personally just used the crate. I'm sure there are things I'm forgetting and others will add to the list. Good luck and keep us posted.
Listen to your heart. You won't make a mistake with either sex.
UPDATE: I met the litter, I went and sat with all the girls and the second littlest curled up into my arms and fell right to sleep for 2 hours.Needless to say, I loved her. Then I sat with all the boys and one started to suck on my finger and dig into my side and slept. They both are on reserve for me and ill be going back Dec. 19th to pick out which one will be my new little love!!
Yay! So exciting! Do you have any pictures?
sounds like you may wind up with two!
