It really doesn't matter; the faults or pluses are dog specific.
Personality - not gender, and it is hard to tell from a puppy how the dog will be, unless you are fairly experienced in evaluating puppies personalities. In addition good dogs are made, not born. Good consistent training and lots of it, early and continuing will give you what you want.
I agree completely. It's all in the training.
I agree with everyone who stated that personality is more important. I don't think it makes a huge difference as long as they are fixed. That being said, I personally prefer males. No legitimate reason, I just do. :-)
My opinion is that if you get to meet the parents and are happy with their personalities and temperments, you have a great chance that every pup in the litter are great pups. I was able to meet Webster's mom and dad and I saw how they interacted with the owners -there was mutual love and respect between all parties. ALL of the pups were lovely (not a bad choice in the bunch) and we picked Webster solely on his color.
I have had 2 sets of boy/girl dogs and, for some reason, my males are easier to housetrain then my females. My males go potty around the edge of the yard, my females go anywhere they want - leaving brown spots and piles right in the middle of the yard. Both are affectionate and loyal, the boys seem a little more patient with kids. My girls are more alert and bark to let us know that something strange is happening, but my boys are more reliable about staying close to the house.
Just my 2 cents - have fun choosing your pup (although, often, they choose you!).
Thank you all so much for your replies...It was interesting reading everyones opinion! :) We went to our puppy pick and a sweet little girl basically crawled into my lap and as soon as I picked her up, she nuzzled her face in my chest and passed out. I knew instantly that she was mine. :) Her name is Olive and she comes home at the end of the month. I cannot wait to see how her personality ends up once shes here!!!
My next dog is going to be named Olive. I love that name.
Congratulations!
