Labradoodle & Goldendoodle Forum
My 7 month old boy rarely barks. Late last night, when our son (who ishome from college), came walking up the hall stairs and past our open bedroom door, the labradoodle jumped up from our bed and went into full launch bark mode-scaring my husband and me in the process. I had been sound asleep and was really startled and disoriented. It did not help that our son had his hoodie slung over his head because his hands were full! I guess Quincy does have some watchdog blood in his genes after all.

We are dealing with the same thing with our Vern. Our DD & SIL are home for Christmas and have been coming in late (2 am) and Vern goes ballistic, which ignites Fudge. I think dogs are as used to our routines as we are and changes are hard on them. I love my DD...because all she says is, "why do they bark so much." Hmmm.....I wonder if it has anything to do with someone walking into the house at 2 am :)
I think its their protection mode kicking in... they are just doing their job. He was probably sleeping too and when he heard your son he too was startled and the first thing he is going to do is bark. Well at least you know he will wake you for sure if there is something wrong !!!
I have only heard Gavin really light up like that once. We were around the campfire in totally darkness and he was sound asleep. Some neighbours showed up emerging out of the darkness from the beach. Well Gavin sprang to his feet and made the fiercest sounding bark you have ever heard. We were all startled. I guess that's why they say you should let sleeping dogs lie?
We have one of those Lear Jet fans too. I hate it and cannot sleep if it is on. So for me its - dog barks and wakes me up OR fan with jet engine noise and don't sleep.....
Monty is not a barker. Twice he woke us at night, with a low woof sound. When we starting listening, it was because a bear was on the deck! We now pay attention if/when he barks!
Our son graduated from college in June and still living at home - mostly. On weekends he often comes in late and Ned growls and barks at him every time - and he LIVES here...... go figure.
