I didn't write my own opinion in the first post because I wasnt sure how people would react. I, myself, am on the fence. Part of me can appreciate the art that goes into this. They did an incredible job. Its incredibly close to the real MLPs. The feet are adorable. I also recognize that the dye and extensions are all safe for dogs. The article seems to go into a lot of depth with how "humane" this is for the dogs-- "they like it" I think they say at some point.

 

as a child I LOOOOVED MLPs so this has a special cuteness to me for that reason alone.

 

But I thoroughly agree. it is just a little bit too far...

I know and worked for someone who did this competitively so I guess I have a different perspective. I do think many of these "designs" can go too far, for sure. Perhaps fake eyelashes or things like that are truly uncomfortable for the dog. I don't agree with that certainly. But many creative groomers are very aware of the dog's comfort. And, many of the dogs really love it I think. Just like a show dog might love being shown, some of these dogs really enjoy being groomed, going to competitions to meet people, etc. 

 

I can't speak to every creative groomer's methods, but the one that I know only uses dog specific dye that doesn't irritate or itch, and she even does this on her own dog, who really seems to enjoy the competitions. The costumes she does all involve the dye and the haircut, and I've never seen evidence that it makes her dog uncomfortable in any way. It really is a fun artistic expression, and I think it's great, as long as they are aware of their dog's comfort.

Wow, this looks cool, but really, does this take artistry too far? How comfortable could this have been for the dog to have done? Eyelashes?  Hair extentions? ....just sayin, I am not sure I could sit through something like that!

We were in Carmel-by-the-Sea recently and ate at The Cypress Inn. (Highly recommend it. Alma loved the chicken dinner.)  Anyway, we didn't realize that the next day was Carmel's annual poodle day parade.  The restaurant was filled with poodles and other dogs since Carmel is so dog friendly.  Some of the poodles had their hair dyed and all done up.  It was amazing!  The owner's love their dogs and they get treated better than some humans.
