Labradoodle & Goldendoodle Forum

So I was in petsmart with my doodles last night and everybody was comment on how well they were behaved and how pretty.....I was very happy to hear the comment until the lady at the end of the line had to put in her two cents oh so they are just mutts overpriced....Has anyone else ever experienced this rude behavior?  I was furious.........................If i could have only stooped to her level and told her what I thought......

I've experienced my share of these comments too. Really odd. Some seem to think that mixing any 2 breeds is wrong somehow, or irresponsible...they usually feel that a dog's worth can be measured by the "purity" of its pedigree. It sometimes helps when I point out that people have been intentionally mixing breeds for well...forever! One example: a number of guide dog schools prefer lab/golden mixes to pure labs or goldens. Others are mainly criticizing the cost of the dog...although responsibly bred dogs of any breed or mix will be relatively expensive. I find it strange...it would never occur to me to criticize another person's dog on the basis of its breed so it always takes me by surprise! A good dog is a good dog and that's that as far as I'm concerned! ;-)
What is it about Pet Smart that brings this out in people? I had the same thing happen to me at Pet Smart a couple of years ago (there's a discussion on here somewhere about it) . And it seems like it is usually owners of Golden Retrievers who have the most to say. I think they are just jealous because our dogs are so much cuter than theirs!
Well we all love our mutts, so who cares! It's nobody's business how much we paid for our doodles, why we picked out our doodles, etc....etc......
The only thing I say is (very calmly) "well i love my mutt and she was worth every single penny i spent".

BTW last night someone asked me if Peri was a poodle! That was a first! But it goes to show you lots of poodles look like doodles and vice versa....
This is very unfortunate. I am sorry about your experience. I think people just are put off by the whole "designer dog" market and really do not know enough about it to make an educated comment. Whenever I have Angel in a situation where I think this might come up I make a joke of it myself but always finish up with "But the money was worth the time I have saved not constantly picking up shedding hair. She hardly sheds at all." That gets people's attention and we are onto another topic. I gues I avoid. But in your situation that really wasn't possible. My sister-in-law is a Golden Retriever owner and she loved the idea of a low shedding dog so much they have bought a Cock-a-poo puppy and she is just a mini version of my golden doodle.
We had that happen once at my daughters soccer game. There was a lady with a wild, out of control, standard poodle there and we had Hunter there also who was just the ultimate-well behaved dog that paticular day. As we were walking out we ended up by her and my 11-year-old daughter said "your poodle is pretty - our dog is 1/2 poodle" (as the poodle was barking at everyone and practically dragging the lady!) to which the snotty lady replied "its a mutt then" and Ava, soooo quick witted that she is says "hu looks like my mutt is better behaved than your poodle is" - I just smiled and beamed and patted Ava on the back and Hunter on the head. To this day when we see the lady at soccer functions she won't look at us. LOL
I don't understand what's wrong with mutts. They're unique, often very healthy animals. And the fact that all dog breeds are simply mixes of other "pure"breeds is not arguable. And how do these people who bash on our dogs even know where we got them from? Yes, maybe we paid a breeder $2,000 for him, but that's our business anyway. But so many of us have rescued our dogs, too. My girl Harlow was starving on the streets before we adopted her for under $300. I don't feel ashamed for owning her, I feel proud. But either way, we love our dogs and they are good dogs. That's all that matters.
My vet (who DOES not own a dooodle but owns two purebred dogs) was at a local training facility. They do obedience and agility with their dogs. Someone started bashing doodles and he stepped in and informed them in no uncertain terms that he had a client that bred doodles and does MORE testing then ANY of his "purebred" breeder clients. He said based upon that and the health and temperment of these dogs he has recommended the breed to many people.
I was so proud of him!!
Wow. I never realized there was such a resentment towards doodles until I read this thread. I've received nothing but nice comments from people when I'm out with chloe ever since she was a small puppy. In fact my brother-in-law was keen on taking her for a walk when she was young because she was such a chick-magnet lol. A minivan with a family once pulled there car over to ask me questions about her because they were considering one. And at the dog park where there were 20 or so other dogs running around I had a few other owners there tell me she looks like a teddy bear running around out there with the other dogs and that she should be in some kind of tv commercial lol

The only odd encounter I had was a couple that once came up to me and asked me what she was. I said a goldendoodle. Then they asked if she had papers. I was confused but I assumed they meant if she was a show dog or something so I said no and then the lady asked if she was a purebreed. ??? I just said "no" politely :)
I also think it's incredibly rude when people ask how much we paid for her. I never want to admit it, but I also don't think it's anyone's business....it's often accompanied by that same "mutt" mentality. My DH wanted to tell everyone she was a mutt just to keep them quiet, but I don't think he does that anymore. Since Molly is a "chocolate phantom" she looks very unique.....so I think she gets more looks than most doodles. DH doesn't enjoy talking to people on the street about our dog as much as I do. It is very weird that people have this thing about "designer dogs". I think it's great that oodles are so popular. And our dogs have always been golden retrievers. That said, I adore my golden and wish she were younger. Every day's a gift. With all of our dogs.
People should never be rude. End of story. However, I think the rudeness often comes from frustration. Doodle breeders market high priced puppies to buyers based on the idea that Doodles are superior in health and temperament to purebred Poodles, Labs and Goldens. This is offensive to purebred fanciers who are committed to their breeds.

Just saying.
I don't think anti-doodle people have resentment as much as misunderstanding. Before mixing breeds was 'popular' it was what happened when unneutered/unspayed loose dogs visited neighbor dogs. It wasn't done on purpose and all the truly responsible breeders bred pure breeds according to a standard and to keep loved breeds alive and well. So purposely mixing breeds to get a litter with unknown results and no health testing and no standards...well it WAS irresponsible at one point. And then to charge such high prices?

And there still are people breeding mixes due to popularity and to make fast money since doing it casually isn't much work.

But there are also people breeding responsibly, breeding with high standards as to the protocol (health testing, etc). Pure breed fanciers don't always understand this. In the pure breed world, dogs typically have to prove themselves to be a 'worthy' representation of the breed (through conformation shows, obedience, etc) before they are bred. So there are some differences and reasons why some people look down on doodle breeding.

But it's all in perspective.
This is exactly what I was trying to say. They don't view it as being mean. I think many are trying to be informed people who are angry about puppy mills and the designer dog craze. They are just slightly misinformed about certain things. But there are misinformed people on both sides of the argument. I find it somewhat hard to respond to because I hate the designer dog craze too. I do not feel that Labradoodles and Goldendoodles are a mistake, but I hate seeing all of these crazy poodle mixes being bred just to make a few bucks. It's hard to know where to draw the line. Personally, I don't think the issue is mixed breed vs. pure breed. It's good breeders vs. bad bad breeders and puppy mills.
