So there I was out in the yard, the kids playing on their swing set, when suddenly what was innocent rough wrestling by Rosco and Boca turned into something that didn't seem right. It got more vicious and I heard yelping...franticness. It looked like Rosco (i'm guessing) somehow got stuck in his grip on Boca's collar. Or vice versa, but I think it was Rosco. In any case it scared the carp outta me because I realized there was nothing I could do to get them apart as I got close. They were wiggling too fast and I couldn't even tell who or what to grab! I went to the hose in case a hose down would help them forget the current freak out and then thank God, they broke free. But the hose did come in handy because the moment they broke free they were still riled up and kinda angry toward each other. So I aimed their way and they separated to get away from the water. PHEW! Rosco had a bloody nose but wouldn't let me get near. Otherwise they both seemed fine and are friends again. No lasting damage, but I have Boca's collar off right now--which I'm conflicted about.
You're probably wondering..."CONFLICTED ABOUT WHAT? KEEP THE DANG COLLAR OFF...DON'T YOU SEE WHAT CAN HAPPEN??" Yes, yes, I totally get that, but in the 6 years I've had dogs this has never before happened so I can only imagine it may never happen again. However, the chance of my dog needing to be detained by the collar or the collar needing to be looked at should they ever get loose is far more likely to happen. Anyway, it was scary!

This must hae been truly frightening! Quick thinking with the hose.
Too scary and thankfully neither was hurt too bad. Sadly - my boy's collars almost never come off. No fence in Mich. or Florida so they pretty much live in them. Perhaps you said (I haven't read all the pages yet) but what type collars were these. This is a big fear for me as Stuart is so much larger than Rooney who could get hurt if Stuart was in a panic. My guys do not "go for" the collar when they play but Stuart does love to DRAG Rooney by the leash. :) So glad for a good outcome for you!!
Man I would have started crying and screaming and someone would have had to calm me down more than the dogs! So sorry you had to go through this, I truly feel for you.
Stanlee LOVES grabbing onto Coopers collar and the tags hanging from it. Lucky for me, Cooper does not run and I am not permitted to take him on long walks as he has two bum knees. I am able to take his collar off and leave it off unless he is going to the vet. We have a very large fenced in yard and Stanlee is finally getting to understand the "off" command when he starts to play too rough.
So scary, Adina. I'm so glad they broke free on their own and you didn't have to get in the middle of it. So glad they are ok. I too have wondered about the collar, you just never know what might happen with it on or off.. Glad all is well!
This is so scary. We take the collars off when they are inside (when they tend to play most), but they ALWAYS have two collars on outside (efence and tag collars). They are never out there alone and they usually do their own things outside, but this scares me to death! I am glad all is okay :)
Oh so scary! Glad both dogs are okay. I never have a collar on Trav when he's at home, even though there are no other dogs in the household. We did have something similar, when daughter's dog was here. The dogs were running through the house and Gren stepped on Trav's foot, which caused him to start yelping and ki-yii-ing. Three adults headed for him, and Gren suddenly attacked the noisy hound. We had to haul Gren off of Trav. It was scary--like Gren had decided all the activity and noise directed at Trav meant he could/should take him out, permanently. Trav was okay, but it scared all of us. Later on I read that this sort of thing happens--a pack of dogs will sometimes attack and kill an injured, noisy animal.
Wow! I'm so glad they broke free and all ended well. And here's to your hose skillz!!!
very scary.
When I had my yorkie at our old house a neighbor tossed out rabbit food right on the other side of our fence. My husband and I were in the house and hear this horrible yipping so we went running. My dog had stuck his head through the fence to get the rabbit food and as he pulled his head back it grabbed his collar and he was thrashing around. I grabbed his body still and DH was like superman and just pulled the fence apart. To think what would have happen if we did not think fast....
Oh how scary! So glad Rosco is ok now. This really scares me...is it common for dogs to get stuck on collars? I always have their collars on and Ben does grab at Zoe's neck so I'm wondering if I should just not have them on when home. I hate the action of putting on the collar every time we go out because they know its going out time and get so excited so thats why I always kept it on.
So this makes me wonder how many times there was a repeat occurance of the dogs getting stuck on another's collar.
IMO, there is a greater chance of the dogs running off than getting caught in a collar again.
Today my 2.5 year old stood on the inside of the screen door and instructed the dogs who were outside:
"DO YOU REMEMBER WHAT YOUR OLDER SISTER SAID? DO NOT BITE ON YOUR BROTHER's NOSE! OKAY!? THAT's THE RULE!"
Natalie is quite the character as usual. Gotta love her : )
