Labradoodle & Goldendoodle Forum
SNOW! That is correct - for the 1st time in 4 YEARS - I'll get to be home in Michigan for Christmas. I'm so excited as dh and I are driving up and taking Rooney & Stuart - they have NEVER EVER seen snow, so this should be fun. I'm suspecting that Rooney will not appreciate it at all and big ol Stuart is going to be crazy. I've had dogs in snow before but they were labs and snow was never an issue - I'm worried about the doods feet with the ice and snow and also about snow clingers in their hair. I did get them coats to help keep the dry while on walks - should I be getting some of the doggy boot things? Do they stay on their feet and what is the best brand. Any tips or tricks would be appreciated for these Florida doods!!!! Camilla's beautiful photos of Darwin in new snow have me so excited!!!

Oh Donna, Such a happy Quincy! Love this video!
We get two big containers (like carryout Chinese soup containers) fill with warm water and dip. You can't keep it from happening and if it gets to clumpy it's time to come in. During playtime we try to knock off snow balls but typically she does not care. Daisy does have a snow suit, kind of repels the snow (Quincy has one too and he's from where it really snows) here is a photo of it.
They are going to have so much fun. I hope it snows!
How exciting! I'll be curious to hear how the boys like the snow. For me, I would prefer living in a no snow area. Or an area that has snow constantly. Denver does not get much snow and when it does, it melts pretty quickly. It's the slush and mud that does not go well with white doodles. And yes, the snow sticks to their fur. I usually put Monty in a bathtub and shower his snowballs off since sometimes they can get really frozen and I can't pick them apart with my fingers. I've also used Mushers Secret cream, but mainly Muttluks boots for Monty. He had no problems with them and they do stay on pretty well unless your doodles get a bout of snow zoomies than you might see an occasional flying boot if it was not fastened properly.
This photo is the funniest! Love Monty's expression!
I live in NJ and both my doodles LOVE the snow. I put Mushers Secret on their pads before they go into the snow. They do get the snowballs on their legs and chest but I just comb them out when they come in. I was thinking of getting kids PJ's for them with long arms and legs to prevent the snowballs. My doodles would stay outside all day in the snow if I let them.
How fun! Darwin doesn't have problems with his feet in the snow, but we do have to watch out for salted sidewalks, those are BAD for paw pads! We usually just dip Darwin in warm water to get rid of the snowballs
I live in Wisconsin, and last winter we had VERY little snow, so don't be surprised if there is none at Christmas time. My son who lives in Florida, wants to bring his fiancee,(native of Honduras) to see snow here too. I told him not to get his hopes up, cause you just can't count on it anymore.
Of course when we do get it, the snow balls are a big pain, to say the least. The best thing would be to keep their coats on the shorter side. I've had days where I've had to put both doodles in the bathtub to get the balls off. NOT FUN!!
I used Mutluks for both of my doodles last winter. The problem isn't so much the snow as the salt that is used for the ice. The salt burns there paws, or so they say. I know last winter there were times when Winston in particular had a hard time with that, especially on long walks. But if you're not walking them on the main city streets and side walks you won't need to worry about it.
