Having just read the posts on the "Vet bills are ridiculous" discussion I wanted to split out a discussion about Pet Insurance. If you have insurance, what is it called, what does it cover and how much is it? I am considering it and would love to have your input. Call me lazy, but if you have already researched it and are using it why not huh?
We ended up with PetPlan after looking at what was offered by the major Pet Insurance carriers. Actually, I started by reviewing the previous posts on Doodle Kisses to identify the top three. Then I went online and got quotes. After looking at what each one offered we selected PetPlan. Try searching the Forum and all your research will be done for you!
I got insurance for Samantha and will for Charli as soon as possible. Samantha loves to jump to catch a ball so I purchased it with the thought to cover the expenses if she tore a ligament jumping. BUT after being a DK member for over a year I have peace of wallet knowing that we are covered for anything.
I went with gopetplan.com
I purchased their 'silver' plan. I didn't need it for the 'regular' well check vists and vaccines. I wanted it for the bigger things. I paid $235 (tho they do charge by zip code - my daughters zip code was about $15 less per year). I have a $200 deductable per incident per year and then thay pay 100% up to $12,000 annually. Petplan policies feature a "deductible" for each unrelated accident, illness or injury per year. An unrelated incident is defined as a condition or set of conditions, which have no connection with each other. Petplan covers injuries and illnesses for life with no dollar limits per condition
They do get vet records to rule out preexisting conditions.
I have the Pet Plan Gold and think that Pet Plan is the best that I have found. I pay $16/month, Pittsburgh area. They have 3 different plans to suit what you need and can afford.
Check out pet insurance with ASPCA....here is the link...they have 4 levels of insurance etc...copied from their site...

Level 1 of our pet insurance starts with basic accident coverage that covers injuries like broken bones and poison ingestion.

We are in Canada and here Petplan has been bought out by another company I think , and the comparisons I checked out said it wasn't quite as good. Petplan seems to have a good reputation, but here I use Vet Insurance. It's around $50 per month with dysplasia coverage, and they refund 90% of claims BUT the maximum claimable amount is $20,000 Canadian for the life of the policy (and your pet), which could rack up very quickly imo, especially with an older dog, so less than ideal. They were very swift at paying out a claim I made though without any problems.
Thanks to all! I have plenty to look into now. I have never taken out pet insurance but with the advent of 2 active dogs I think it is worth investigating. The policy part of Petplan that concerns me is the "referral or after hours" vet service. It seems to me that in an accident or orthopedic work you would have to go to an after hours vet or specialist? I will look into that carefully because I am really looking to insure against major catastrophic illnesses and injuries.
