Saw this on our local news today.  Since it's in New Jersey I thought I get everyones opinions. I personally think it's a great idea. Also does anyone know if they are actually enforcing it.

Hmmm, did you or your sis get a ticket?

Hmmm. Not in person.

I couldn't listen on my iPad, but "The key to this law are the words  improper transportation, meaning that if a dog were to be traveling in the rear of an open pickup or hanging the majority of its body out a window, then and only then, would a driver receive a summons" makes sense to me. I never did feel comfortable seeing dogs in back of pickups. Always wonder how they don't just jump out after something or where they would end up in a car accident.

Having a dog in the open bed of a pickup truck is one of the things that is forbidden in almost any adoption contract for any rescue, too. Very dangerous and stupid.

Certainly, something is needed but has to be better than what is out there so far.

So far, I see NOTHING.  Yes, I do have a harness restraint.  No, I don't use it. Yes, I think I should.   I don't like how it allows the dog to move around.  Sweetie almost hung herself in the thing.

My last dog actually wore a seat belt.  But he was big enough. I just strapped him in with the shoulder strap and he sat there.
But he was unique.  F.J. was in a rear end collision with his last dog which slammed into the dashboard and did get hurt.

I hope an inventor or an engineer sees this post and helps.  I'm getting the harness back out... but PITA

This was just posted on FB:

To All: Capt has been on a whirlwind media blitz over the last week, last two were 101.5 Radio and News Channel 12 NJ Pet Stop show airing this weekend I believe. Still trying to dispel the misinformation about belting or harnessing dogs in vehicles after that DMV Press Conference three weeks ago. There is NO NEW LAW requiring dogs to be seat belted or harnessed in vehicles in NJ. The improper... transport law refers to unrestrained dogs in the bed of a pickup truck or a dog hanging it's body out the window of a moving vehicle. We do suggest at a minimum that you attach the leash through the seatbelt and if your dog is not in control that could be an issue. Please travel with you pup and enjoy life !!! Just sayin..............Capt

I don't think anything that attaches the leash, if it's attached to a collar, to something is a good idea. It seems to me a sure way to break a dogs neck or crush it's trachea in a crash.

Hooray!
