To understand the issues involved, read Pet Food Politics by Marion Nestle: http://www.amazon.com/Pet-Food-Politics-Chihuahua-Coal/dp/0520257812

You have mentioned this book so much that now I just have to get it. Still trying to get through "the other end of the leash". But the Nestlé book is next.

Pet Food Politics is a very short, easy read, and not at all boring; Nestle is a wonderful writer; she has a dry wit that comes through even with such a serious subject. You may be able to get it from your local library.

It is very difficult to find ANY treats that are not made in China or with products from China.  I read all the labels and if China is mentioned, I put it down.  But big corporations could care less if they can make money from anything, and I mean anything.  It seems that the food you buy (from Safeway) should be safe, but probably not.  GMO's are the norm these days and if not for my son's nagging, I would probably still be eating them.  Corn!  Almost the whole national supply has been modified by Monsanto.  Look at all the foods that contain corn syrup (definitely modified).  And then the farmers who have traditionally grown corn, alternate with soy beans.  Also contaminated.  So, we don't have to look to China for contaminates in our pet's food supplies, we are doing the same thing to OUR OWN food.  Think about it.  We have.

What's really sad is that the Mexican version of Coca Cola, available here in any Mexican grocery store, is made with cane sugar, not corn syrup. And it tastes a thousand times better. I find it difficult to believe that sugar would be cheaper in Mexico than it is here, or that sugar would be cheaper than corn syrup in Mexico, so I guess something else must be at work there.

Signed it. Found it silly to answer "Why is this important to you" question. But did. Homemade dog treats are very easy to make. Doing organic sweet potatoes in the dehydrator at the moment. They love them.

The solution to all of this is take a few hours and make your own. They last for several months, cost less than $10.00.

I know, I've said it before, but Sue got off that soap box and I had to grab her empty spot for a few!
