I am going to be asked to pick a  puppy most likely this week.  She wont tell  me "when", so this is a guess.  I would like to choose a mini that can't counter surf.  My problem is the puppies initial size was estimated at 20 pounds.  The dame is 30 and the sire is 15 and according to the breeder, both are around 20" tall.

What should I look for to get a small dog, now that the estimate has increased to 25 lbs/20 inches.?

Should I wait for the next litter that has a 17 lb. dame? (no telling what the sire weighs as this is not always provided on the website).  Currently there are 2 cream pups that resemble? mamma. What are the chances that the 15 pound father will influence their size?  I don't wish to deal with counter surfing. Fortunately there are no stools in the kitchen.  Shoulder height for a surfer?  I had some Springers that were able to get their "wrists" up onto the counter...so I'd like something smaller.

Many thanks,

c zoomer

Depends on their jumping skills not size ;-)
My huge Rosco who is 27.5" tall to the shoulder and 95 lbs didn't attempt counter surfing until he was 5.  I left a muffin really close to the edge and that was all he needed to learn ;/

Jaxson is 36 lbs and is kind of tall for his size. He tries to counter surf and he can actually reach quite far back on the counter because his arms are so long! I know it's bad and we make him stop but it's hard because it's so cute and funny to see his little face, especially across the kitchen island!
Where there's a will there's a way.

:D

I agree, when a dog wants to counter surf, they will find a way. Until trained otherwise. Some are lucky to have a dog who doesn't even think about it, then there are my two.....

Not those 2 sweet angels

I really do not think size makes much difference when it comes to counter-surfing.  My friends little 7 lb maltese is a counter surfer and it is really amazing how she gets on the table, etc.  We were staying with them for a weekend and this little girls shredded 3 rolls of toilet paper while we gone on it was sitting on top of a desk! LOL Neither of mine are counter surfers, TG! LOL

I have a 20lb mini goldendoodle and she can't reach the counter.  She tries, but too short.  So not worries about counter surfing at my house unless something is hanging over the edge of the counter.

I hate to tell you but I have a friend with a small mini and that little one jumped counter high like she was on springs and steal whatever she could grab. She did the same thing greeting people.  Happily, training has been successful.

I have a mini who weighs 22 lbs and can't reach our counter.  While he can jump up to our bed, the counter is higher and he could never get up there without falling...and he knows it.  I also have a 70 lb standard who does not counter surf, even though he would be able to quite easily.  There are two reasons I think....first I don't leave anything out on the counter that might entice him to try and second he has been trained that he isn't allowed in the kitchen when the food is out and we are eating.
