Hello DK,

I just have a quick question. Our puppy 8 weeks old has been home 2 days. On the way home (5 hrs drive) he peed in his crate. He was smelling of urine so I used "Simple Solution" Puppy wipes very gentle and sparingly on his legs and feet. Now all he does is chew his feet and sometimes whimpers. Did I do the wrong thing? Our Vet appointment is on Wednesday. Any thoughts?

I am a little confused here.  The ear infection would certainly bother him, causing him some pain and from my experience he would be scratching his ears and perhaps rubbing them.  Is he biting his feet because there is a yeast infection there too?

Maybe others can weigh in here...have your doodles who have had ear infections been biting their feet?

If the ears are bad enough, they can get some yucky smelly stuff on their paws after they scratch their ears, and then maybe that makes them lick their feet.

Thanks Karen..there was no mention of scratching ears in the initial post and that's what had me confused but that makes sense.

Nicky I didn't realize it was his ears until the Vet diagnosed it.

When we left the breeders Mickey was scratching around his collar (I thought) and the breeder said it was because he never had a collar on before. I think he was scratching his ears. I think the feet were just the closest thing to chew and he was in pain. He is feeling 100% better now after 3 applications of the medicine. No foot chewing either.

Dogs will sometimes bite or chew their feet  when they are in pain. It's fairly common when a dog has pain from an orthopedic issue, too.

Also, I asked the Vet about Pet Insurance and recommend Pet Plan and so did DK and lots of friends. So I am going with that one. Signing up tomorrow and I did mention DOODLES & got a 5% discount.

If your doodle is neutered and microchipped those are worth 5% too. You can getup to 15% for various discounts.

I will ask tomorrow before I pay, thanks for the information. Mickey is mircochipped & neutered and the Vet gave me a code too.

Yup asked for them all!

Good.
Now that your pup has been diagnosed and treated for an ear infection, there is a two year waiting period before any ear infection, or related visits will be covered by Petplan. Just an FYI. probably why we advise everyone to get insurance ASAP.
