We go to the vet next Saturday, at which point Toby will have his first heartworm test, and then we will buy some heartworm meds. The vet tech recommended Revolution as it will cover fleas, ticks, and heartworm. Any opinions as to what is the best option? Currently I think probably we'll go with Revolution.
Last year, Jackdoodle was put on Revolution for an unrelated issue. I thought, well, this is great...why not use one product for fleas, ticks, and heartworm, instead of both Frontline and Heartgard? I was told by Jack's immunology specialist that Revolution isn't as effective against any of the things it's supposd to protect against as the separate products are.
We use Sentinel which guards against Heartworm, hookworm, roundworm, whipworm, and fleas (I just checked on the website as I couldn't remember!!) - doesn't cover ticks though.... do we have ticks around here?? We just throw the tablet in with dinner and Hartley eats it without a blink! He never had any problems from taking it and his heartwork test a couple of weeks ago was clear, so I guess it worked!! I think a lot of it depends on your vet, they usually have an 'alliance' with a particular drug company and go with that companies products.
She did mention combining Sentinel with another med for ticks, but said that would come to as much as Revolution alone. Too bad there are options - then I wouldn't have to make up my mind. :)
I didn't know we had to worry about ticks. Hhmm. I have already bought the Sentinel for both of them, so I'll have to see if I think ticks are going to be problem. Perhaps if we go up north camping??
The tech said if we used trails for walking, or dog parks, or went to the beach we should protect against ticks as well. I don't know - I guess I'll just follow their advice.
Our vet is suggesting Revolution as well. I really don't know anything about this, but we will also pick up the "expensive" prescription from them soon. They did the heart worm blood test with his pre op blood work (for neutering)so at least we don't have to pay for that as well. Re ticks,my sisters dog had a huge tick embedded into her. They live on a ravine where their are lots of deer. Maybe that is why. (this is in the GTA)
My Bella Daisy has been on since she was a pup. I get it from Australia at Pets Megastore for about 1/4 the price. It is the exact US product, package and all. Also, you do not have to fool with vet scripts since it is over the counter there like we have started doing frontline here. If you need help with the web address let me know.
My Rosie has been taking Interceptor for heartworm and other intestinal parasite prevention and Frontline for fleas and ticks. Both recommended by her vet. I hope they work as they are supposed to cause I hate to have to remove ticks. They are so gross.
My dogs are on Interceptor and will start their Frontline for the late spring, summer, and early fall (in SW Ohio) for flea and tick season. The only time I have seen a tick on them is in their hair, never attached.
