Hello! We have our name on a list for a new puppy!! I'm very excited for Yeti to have a companion! He loves other dogs so much and will be about 2 years old when we get our second! My only concern is that he likes to mount EVERY (I mean every) dog he meets. Has anyone delt with a situation like this? Yeti has mounted a 5 pound puppy to a 110 pound German shepherd. He doesn't give up no matter how much they snip and snarl. I have read a lot about how some dogs are just "humpers" and you just have to get over it. I'm worried Yeti will constantly try to mount number 2. Is there something we can do during the next couple months to get him out of that habit before we get our second puppy. Any advice on this subject would be fantastic!

Here are a few articles to read about humping:

My black lab likes to mount new dogs he meets. I'm on him as soon as I recognize that he is about to mount...I just say his name in a 'growl' type voice and he backs off. He is just overly excited when he sees a new dog, but he is fine with Chloe and Mollie (my other two dogs)

Please do what you can to train him out of this before pup #2 arrives or I fear the puppy will have a very dreary life! No one likes to be dominated! But god luck--I am sure you can work it out.

Yogi has been a humper since he was 8 weeks old. We know it's not necessarily a bad thing, but we wanted to discourage it. We just say ack, ack (sp?). Then he quits. What's funny, is our second dog was a girl. I think she humps as much as he does :-)
Good luck!

I don't believe in "some dogs are just humpers and you have to get over it". It's a behavior like any other that is not safe for him (as in he may meet a dog who will one day do more than just snip or snarl)  and the new pup, and needs to be addressed.

My oldest only tries to hump his little sister, (who is the exact same size as he is) and although I understand the reasons behind it being innate, I see that it bothers Bella, so I've trained him to stop immediately upon my correction with the same training I've done everything else.  When he stops, on my "uh-uh" command, he was rewarded.  I don't use treats anylonger but I still give him an "atta boy" and a smile when he stops.
