This may sound really weird, but does anyone's Doodle have extra slimy saliva?  Maddie's saliva is so slimy, it is almost like what it feels like if you pick up a fish! And, as a result of constantly "licking her chops", the fur around her mouth gets really hard after it dries, and her face smells. I have to constantly wash her face, but it doesn't seem to do any good since it only takes a short while until it is right back to the way it was before I washed it.  Morgan is not like this at all - I guess hers is "normal", thank Goodness! But, even the water bowl, after she drinks, the water looks cloudy, almost as though it has had fish in there.

Do you think this is something that may be a sign of a problem she may have? I have only just noticed it getting like this recently (like within the last couple of months). They are eating the same food they have been eating for a couple of years now, and no other changes in her diet that I can think of.

F. Parker, I know you had made a comment a while back about your Doods' having some slimy saliva, but is it this bad? If so, is there something you can do for it?

That does sound weird and I'm sorry I don't have any idea what that might be but it doesn't sound right at all.  I hope someone here sheds some light on this for you.

I think all dogs' saliva is slimy to a large degree. That's why any bowl they lick feels like it never gets clean when I try to hand wash it.

I think I could deal with the slime, but the odor and her face having the hard sections of fur is what makes me crazy!

yes, that's so true. it's always got a layer of slime on it.

Exactly. It takes a lot of soap and rubbing.

It's probably not an issue medically-but I know what you mean. My sisters cocker spaniel is like this and then he shakes it all over!!

Haley's saliva gets particularly thick and sticky during hot months when he has strenuous exercise and the fur around his mouth does stick together when it dries but I have not noticed a bad odor nor cloudy water unless he has dirt in his beard.  Now that the weather has cooled his saliva has thinned.

That's a thought. I had not thought about it being a tooth problem. But Her breath is fine, that's not where the odor is coming from, so I didn't even think about her teeth. I will check into getting them cleaned though. Thanks Roberta!
Funny, i was just noticing Bella had an odor recently and salivating more when she is waiting to eat. Sometimes her beard gets a little stiff but most times not. I attribute the smell to her occasional poop eating tho.she was just at the vet and her teeth were fine so im not sure id think of that as the first cause. Just think its pretty normal really .

I have that problem with Oliver, a week after his bath his mouth stinks and yes.. I wash it all the time too.  Sasha's mouth never stinks, she is a apricot golden doodle so she has light hair.  The hair around her mouth has turned a dark rust color which makes her mouth look dirty but its not.  Ollie is black so you can't tell on him.  His mouth always seems to be wet, I am surprised he does not have mold growing on it - LOL

Does he run when he sees that you are going to wash his face? Maddie does. As soon as she sees me get the wash cloth, she gets in her crate and gets as far to the back as she can get!

Winston has thick slimy saliva too, it sort of sticks and leaves a layer that's harder to wash off... but not a stinky mouth. Sophie's feels totally different, cleaner almost, so I was wondering about it too...
