I've tried to search this and can't find anything... Does anyone have experience with owning a standard (Sawyer is 85 lbs.) and adding a mini?

I don't have standards and minis that live together but Daphne and Bailey (Elizabeth, Bailey and Bruin) were the very best of friends before they both got siblings. They still play together but not like they used to. Elizabeth and I Doodlesit for each other and it's always fun! Now it's Pippa and Bruin that love to play together. Standards and minis can do very well together. Check out some pictures in this discussion:

What size is your mini expected to be? I believe Bailey was 65 lbs and Daphne was about 20 lbs in those pictures.

My Wally weighs about 50 pounds, and Charlotte weighs approximately 23 pounds. They play together perfectly; Charlotte thinks that she's bigger than she is, and Wally understands that he needs to be careful when they roughhouse. A good friend of mine had a Toy Poodle and an Airedale, and their size difference was never an issue.

My girls are only 20# apart on size, but I used to have a Great Dane and a Miniature Dachshund at the same time, it was a hoot and no problems with the size.

I have a standard labradoodle and a mini schnoodle. They play just fine. The schnoodle was here first and he is about 8 yrs old, so he isn't as energized as she is, but he still holds his own.
My bil is a dog trainer in the Air Force. He says that dogs do not know size when it comes to other dogs. I think I've heard it before too.

I have a Standard and a Mini (62 lbs and 22 lbs), and they do fine together.  My big guy (Murph) is a bit pushy, but the little one (Guinness) puts him in his place when he needs it. He gives him a little nip and Murph knows to back off.  They are great buddies and are true "bonded pair".

Thanks for your replies! Nothing is concrete about adding another.. Just thinking out loud! Sawyer is about 85 lbs. But he's very gentle and from what I've seen with him, he adjusts level of play to who he's playing with.

Clancy is 60, Ned is 28, and Gordie is 42 pounds.  The cousin dogs are 60, 75, and 9 pounds.  There really isn't a problem other than those associated with size - not between the dogs but in how the humans handle the dogs.  The 9 pounder has no problems going in and out our doggy door.

I wouldn't think size would be a problem.  I have an ALD and a Jackapoo and they play together all the time.  The advantage for the Jackapoo is that he can crawl under our bed when he is tired and larger dogs cannot get under the bed.  That is his own special place.  We have had a standard poodle (55 pounds), labradoodle (105 pounds), goldendoodle (85 pounds) and now the Jackapoo (29 pounds) and no size conflicts.
