Labradoodle & Goldendoodle Forum

Hello.

I've been on this site since we got our sweet golden doodle Phoebe about 9 months ago, but this is the first time I've felt like I have a question that I couldn't find answered on here (maybe I didn't look hard enough).

I am just curious about what seems to be the average size for a standard size golden doodle. Our Phoebe is 10 months old but she is only about 40 lbs. I feel like she is really small as far as golden doodles go. At the dog park yesterday we met a mini labradoodle that was basically the same size as she is right now.

SO, I guess my question is, is it normal for some standard golden doodles to be this small, or is she still just going to grow for a while longer??? (I know that is is probably hard to know since golden doodles are crossbreeds and all vary in size, but I thought I may get some insight into what is typical.) Thanks!!

Do you know how much her parents weighed? Also, how much did she weigh at 4 months? The equation of doubling the weight at 4 months and adding 10lbs to estimate adult weight seems to be pretty accurate.

I've heard people on this site mention anywhere from 40's- 110+ lbs for their standards. So, I would say that she is on the low end for a standard. She might add on a couple more lbs in the next month or 2, but she is probably close to done growing.

Phoebe is such a cutie!!

I am not sure how much either of her parents weighed. They just looked to be pretty average sized for their breeds (golden retriever mom, standard poodle father). At 4 months, I'm pretty sure she was about 20 lbs. so that would put her at about 50 lbs. full grown, but I have a feeling she won't quite reach that weight. She is just pretty short and petite. Thanks for the reply!

It's not at all uncommon for full-sized female Standard Poodles to weigh 40-45 lbs. The Poodle breed standard doesn't mention weight, only height. With mixed breeds, there is really no way to predict adult size, but it's really more about height than weight. It's hard to tell from your picture how big your pup is, since she's sitting down and there are no other dogs or people in the photo to compare her to. How tall is she? Height is measured at the top of the withers.

By 10 months, all but the very largest (90+ lbs) doodles are finished with their bone growth, but they do continue to gain weight in the form of bone and muscle mass. So I'd say your pup is about as long and tall as she is going to get, but she may get a bit heavier.

What generation is she? Do you know if there are any smaller Poodles in her background?

She is only about 21 in. (withers height). She definitely doesn't have the long poodle legs (more of a golden retriever build I think). She is an F1 golden doodle. Mom was an average size golden retriever and the father seemed to be a an average size standard poodle as well. I'm not sure how much either of them weighed. I'm guessing she will just be on the small side, which is fine with us, but I just thought she seemed a little abnormally small! Thanks for the reply!

Here are some photos to gauge size.

She is adorable.

Karen is correct in that her bone growth is probably close to being complete.  Although our oldest Boomer continued to grow until about 14 or 15 months.  He is 27 inches.  His biological brother, Mariner, is only about 22 inches. Although his height may have been influenced by medical issues.

There is also evidence that the timing of spaying and neutering has a bearing on a dogs size.

Our third doodle, Shayna, was "supposed" to be a mini.  Her mother was 42 pounds and father was 25 pounds - she is about 45 pounds.  Genetics is like a lottery/

We were all curious about the size of our puppies.

What a cutie!  Gavin is an F1 but has the long legged poodle body and is 29in tall and 80lb.  His mother was the poodle and was on the taller/larger side for a standard poodle.  I think his height was pretty much set by a year, but he continued to put on weight until he was two while maintaining his slim build.

This doesn't help you as much right now, but eventually you'll know what to label her as to size.

This is from GANA (goldendoodle association):

Petite range: Height: below 14 inches, typically 25 lbs. or less

Miniature range:
Height: over 14 but under 17 inches (35cm to 42cm) at wither, typically 26-35 lbs.

Medium range: Height: over 17 but under 21 inches (43cm to 52cm) at wither, typically 36-50 lbs.

Standard range: Height: over 21 inches (53cm to 63cm) at wither, typically 51 or more lbs.

Final size category of a dog will be determined at adulthood and is measured at the withers.
Please be aware that the estimated size of a puppy by a breeder is an educated guess.
Therefore, a puppy's final size may vary somewhat from a breeder's initial calculation.
Have never seen this one before! Enzo falls right into place! Medium Range, 20 inches and 49 lbs.

It's on their website.

Finn is 9 months old and weighs 68 lbs!!  His mom was a golden doodle and weighed 55 and dad a standard poodle and weighed 50.  The breeder told us he could be up to 70 lbs.  He was the biggest pup in the litter.  We met his sister at the vet last week and she weighs in at 45 lbs!!  He looked like a giant next to her.  Like it has been said before very hard to predict with these cuties!!

Your Phoebe is adorable!! 40# sounds like the perfect weight to me, but I have two 60# doodles. My breeder did say they'd be about that much, however one is the runt of the litter and has siblings over 100# !   I seem to remember them continuing to grow up till about 15 months, so maybe Phoebe has a little weight yet to gain. The 4 month formula is about as accurate as I've seen on hundreds of doodles. Good luck.
