Our doodle Bella's best friend the 6 yr old wheaton terrier Sammy had to be put to sleep this week. Our family is heartbroken and we are wondering how we can best express how much we loved Sammy via a sympathy gift to her owner Steve a middle age guy with lots of heartbreak.

Oh, I'm so sorry about your loss. Maybe you and Bella could just spend extra time with him as I'm sure he needs the company. Do you have a lot of photos? maybe you could make some sort of photo memory book or something...

The photo memory book is a fantastic idea!  I've been sitting here thinking about what might help to cheer him up....this is perfect.

Love the photo idea, but also, when our family cairn died, I gave my mom this box:  http://www.willowtreeshop.com/willowtree2010/willow-tree-26603.html

She put Mr. Jake's tags in it and it is next to her bed. She loves it. Inside it says "truly a friend".

This is very sweet also.

I really love this....very special.  I'm just not sure about it for a guy.

True - I think they have one with a male hugging a dog too though.  May still be too mushy!

OK - this just made me start crying - I loved it but not right for a man I don't think.

Very sweet.

I f perhaps you have a photo of the two friends you could send it along with a handwritten note which I'm sure will mean a lot to this man.  I would keep it simple and meaningful.  How sad. : (

I am sorry to hear about Sammy. I think you have gotten some good ideas.

I am so sorry for your family and your doodle and most of all for the family that had to put their beloved fur boy down.  How wonderful of you to want to express your love, sympathy and friendship to the owner.  I thought I saw that you had a young son but something I used to do when my children were younger was to encourage them to draw and/or write about the pet that was put down.  I used to be amazed at what they would come up with and then we would give it to the owner.  Perhaps this could be included with any pictures you might have.  And, it might not seem like this would be appreciated during this time but bringing over a meal can go along way.  I know when my dog died of cancer I did not feel like cooking let alone eating.  I was truly blessed when someone thought enough of us to bring dinner over one evening.

Please give your doodle lots of extra hugs!

I cannot even begin to tell you how much I appreciated what Karen did for me Nietzsche (and me) and how much it has meant to me.  She posted "In Memory of Nietzsche" in DRC Rainbow Bridge.  I cannot think of anything more meaningful that can be given.  Here are links is to the Pet Loss website home page and the page where a tribute can be posted:   http://petloss.com/index.html
