Can your doodle tell time? It's really weird how Tori knows exactly when it's time to wake the kids up for school, go to the bus, and when the bus is due home. She passes and barks by the steps in the morning almost to the minute of when it's time to go up and wake my son for school, and then when it's time to walk him to the bus stop, she just sits and waits by the front door (I have a pic on my page), and when it's time for BOTH of my sons to come home (at different times) she passes in front of the window seat and jumps up to watch for them to come walking down the street. Yes~ she could be watching my actions in the morning, but I'm not home in the afternoon and she's alone in our house, but my mother-in-law in her peeks at her while she does this from her apartment ( in our house)....Now - I know she's smart, but this???
Supposedly, they can tell what time of day it is by the light (where the sun is coming from) and by the sounds outside; a mail truck, a school bus, the way the traffic sounds are heavier at certain times of day, etc. I have even heard that some dogs can distinguish the sound of your vehicle from other vehicles. I found out that Jack knows it's time to get up by the amount of light in the bedroom, when we set the clocks back.
It would be interesting to put soundproof blackout coverings on the windows and see if they could still tell.
Whopper can definitely tell the difference between our car and other vehicles. When I am home with her and my husband gets home, she can tell that it's him pulling into the driveway outside. We live in a townhome community so this is an accomplishment. If she's not in the bedroom or office where she can clearly hear the car, she can then further distinguish from a distance based on the car alarm being set. All of our neighbors have car alarms that beep as well but she only budges for ours. My husband also has said that when it starts getting close to when I get home from work, she sits by the window looking out for me. I know I can always rely on an immediate greeting!
They are just amazing! Tori starts her pace just when it's about time for both of my kids to get home! She also does a pace when it's about time for her "bed-time" too. She paces as if to say - will you all go upstairs now and leave me alone to sleep. She won't settle down for the night until we have all gone upstairs. And just like a kid who tries to keep their eyes open when really tired - she lays down, getes up lays down, etc.... funny!
Darwin gets up and walks into his crate when it is time for bed. We go to bed at about 11:30 every night, and right when it gets to be that time, he knows it's time for sleep and goes on in, before we even stand up or move. Crazy!
I had a dog that could tell it was time to go up to bed by the closing music on the 10 p.m. news; we always went up to bed right after the news, and as soon as she heard the theme music at 10:30, she'd go to the back door for her last potty break before bed.
Lucy has an inner sense as to what time it is. She knows about what time we usually go to bed and at about that time, if we are not closing things up and shutting things off she starts prancing, whinning and going to the bedroom door, We know she wants to go to bed. Once we go to bed she then settles right down and goes to sleep. Also, when I work 3 - 11, my DH tells me that at about 11 she starts wanting out on the deck or she is looking out the window until I come home. Really neat. They get into a routine and just have that doodle knowledge.
Our catalan sheepdog can tell when I'm about 3-4 minutes from the driveway. I come home at different times, but my husband says that he always goes to the window and then a few minutes later I pull into the driveway. He also knows when it's bedtime. He goes to bed about 10:00. Sometimes I'll look for him and he's already gone up to bed. My labradoodle gets upset if I sleep in too late.
Not only can they tell the time... Thomas knows when it is the weekend. Monday-Friday his daddy (my husband) lets him out in the backyard, then showers and dresses while I of course am still asleep or just lying in our bed. Then he leaves for work. On Saturdays and Sunday's though, the doodle wakes us up by standing beside the bed(on my husbands side) and barks at us. This is because he knows he gets taken for a LONG walk on the weekend mornings. How can he know it is Saturday? He just does.

My hubby says they both start getting really anxious after 5:45 if I am not home yet, they hover near the back door.
They definitely know the sounds of our cars and trucks coming in the driveway. The funniest though is how they swarm around their dad when it is time for their dinner, around 3:30. One will mosey into the living room and sit in front of him, the other will follow and give kisses. Kona will paw at the bowl and look down the hall at us if the swarming doesn't produce someone getting up to fill those dishes. It is a hoot, their communication just amazes me.
