Labradoodle & Goldendoodle Forum

That's what a vet tech said this morning, when the conversation in the examination room turned to hairy ears.  The vet hastily said, "Or the best!"  But this comment by the vet tech was just a reminder of how polarized opinions seem to be about our doodles.  The first groomer I took Trav to informed me that she couldn't understand why anybody would mate two perfectly fine breeds to create a...labradoodle.  (I could almost hear what she REALLY wanted to say instead of labradoodle.)  That groomer shaved Trav's nose, not once but twice--even though I specifically asked one time that he just be bathed, not clipped or trimmed in any way.  We don't go there any more.

I know there have been discussions before about how people react to labradoodles and goldendoodles.  Seems to be love 'em or hate 'em.  But nobody has ever said 'the worst of both breeds' in my presence before.  Trav was there too, but he didn't care.  :)

Has anybody else's doodle been called something derogatory?  And why do people think it's okay to make comments like that to a dog's owner?

LOL at the moths chewing on him analogy :-)
Melissa--I'm going to a Doodle Romp next weekend, and I think Trav's breeder will be there.  I'm a little nervous--his appearance really isn't a very good advertisement for her delightful doodles.  She does her own grooming, and her dogs look great.  Oh, well.  I can pretend he's a rescue--a very recent rescue.  :)

I think he looks great from what I see in the pics on your page! I just loved the description/image of a wooly moth-eaten doggie hairdo.

I used to explain to random people that my daughter insisted on assembling her own outfits because I didn't want to be associated with her choices.  Now, I don't bother.  She is almost eight and has quite an ability to mix patterns and textures.

Yikes!  You've really had some sad experiences with your doods!  So sorry!  Stay far, far away from both that vet and that groomer.
Gail--I don't blame you for not wanting to go back to that vet!  What a jerk!!  And what a crazy groomer story!  The bit about not recommending her to friends with labradoodles--yikes!  I assume she doesn't have to worry about THAT!  She might have been in a bad mood, but she's also not much interested in customer relations, simple courtesy or increasing her business.
I normally just ignore comments such as these, but I will admit that they do get under my skin.  I think in this case, a "You are entitled to your opinion, but you really aren't entitled to be rude"!  In front of her boss that should have been good for something.
Yes, Lucy and Sophies Mom, I probably should have said something.  After all, our vet techs are people we are trusting to take care of our beloved pets, and it makes me nervous to think my dog is disliked for no fault of his own.
Before I got Glory, after my last 2 dogs had died close togother, I  told my vet I was getting a doodle. He was apalled! "They are so hyper!' he said. S o I haven't been to him-who wants to go to someone with such a predisposition? In fact, Glory is a little hyper in situations with other dogs and people. He just loves all, and he loves me and I love him! Carolyn and Glory
Carolyn--I find it strange that a vet would automatically assume all doodles are hyper.  But in all fairness I think of all terriers as being hyper.  :)

Silly people.  Every dog breed was once a that.  And many "thats" (mixed breeds) make great pets.  Fortunately dogs do not care what others think , only what their family thinks.

Rudeness is not restricted to doodles.  I once had a vet ask me what was I thinking when I bought a husky?

I agree that television has encouraged sarcasm as fine wit and rudeness as the norm.  Not in my house.

Yeah for all dogs and dog lovers everywhere!

Well said, Maryann!  Trav didn't care at all what was said about him, and he was such an amazingly good dog while he was getting poked and stuff put in his eyes and hair pulled out of his ears.  He was a good "that."  I guess politeness and wit just don't sell in the media.
Only once did we have someone blatantly comment. It was the owner of a very unruly standard poodle at my younger daughters soccer game. We had Hunter at the game to and she was her typical, happy, quiet self there. All the while this poodle is jumping and barking. We were on our way out and they were walking by us and the poodle was pulling and jumping all over. My older daughter Ava says to the poodle lady "your dog is pretty, our dog is half poodle she is a goldendoodle" to which the lady says "so it's just a mutt then" my very quick whtted daughter says "at least my mutt is better behaved than your poodle". Lol lol the lady stomped off :-). Closed minded people are everywhere, it's their best defense for being uneducated is my theory. They don't know about the wonderful aspects of doodles therefore there are none to them. It's their loss :-)
