Flea and Tick drops????  What is the brand name of what you're using?

The liqiud I use has recommendations on how long not to bathe the dog before and after the medication. The oil on the skin helps get the medication in the hair follicles, I think, where it needs to go. It is several days before and after. I use Frontline.

There is usually a set amount of time to wait before getting the dog wet...I would not reapply it until next month (I'm guessing it's a monthly type of medication.)   I also use Frontline.

I'm always under the mindset that the risk of putting too many chemicals on your dog outweighs the risk of her actually getting fleas or ticks, so I try at all costs to minimize that stuff.  I swore I would stop using it for various reasons, but this year the bugs are terrible and with an infant in the house, I can't risk them bringing in fleas and ticks.  I agree with you...these meds are more trouble than they're worth!

Some of the tick-borne illnesses are life-threatening, and fleas can also kill dogs who have sensitivities to them. Fleas can be a health hazard to humans, too, and a flea infestation in your home is no laughing matter...it can take months, thousands of dollars, and require bombing the whole house (talk about chemicals) to eradicate.

I personally feel the benefits of the preventatives far outweigh the risks.

I suppose...but I wouldn't want to apply a double dose to the dog if it isn't necessary.  I just hate all this stuff....I wish there was some more natural alternative than basically putting pesticide on our pups.  I recently found a "natural" bug spray for humans...with lemons and rosemary...worked really well and I was able to make it for a fraction of the price than buying Off.  Maybe someday we'll have a "natural" option for our dogs.  =)

I use frontline Plus and apply it at least several days before JD is having a bath.

For Frontline, I think it is 48 hours minimum.

Jared-I know soon you will be going to the vet -A LOT, with the new puppy.  Would you please ask your vet about Flea and Tick Products?  I'm suggesting it for a few reasons:

1. I know you have allergies so washing Dakota is a big help for both you and the dog.

2. Hartz is not the best company to produce this product. Actually, Hartz products scare me to death.  Maybe things have changed but a while back they had a not -so- good reputation.

I was thinking maybe an oral-Flea/Tick/Heartworm preventative given to you by the vet may be a good choice for you.  You can give a bath whenever you need and use get a more reputable product.   Just my thoughts

Ask your vet at the next visit.

I was told by a vet tech that the application is fully absorbed after three days and it is OK to bathe at that time---you should NOT reapply it before a month because the dog would get an overdose--even if you didn't wait long enough before bathing, some would have been absorbed so adding another dose would be giving the dog too much.

I do not have too much faith in the Hartz brand--let us know if it works and the dog stays tick and flea free. I use Advantix.

We've used Frontline, Revolution, and Advantix, and I think that all of these products claim to be water resistant if applied monthly.  To concur with what F. said, the drops need the oil on the dogs skin to properly absorb.  I was told by the vet's office that many people have ineffective flea/tick protection because they think they will give the dog a bath and apply the drops to clean skin (what I was about to do!).  I'm sure it says that in the fine print, but I don't read all the fine print all the time :-)
