This morning I tried to give Trixie her Chewable iverhart pill.  She wanted nothign to do with it.

So I saved it for Lunch & Cut it into 4ths.

I mixed it in with her Pumpkin & Plopped it in her food.

She still wanted nothing to do with it.

So I tried to put 1/4 of the pill down her throat ( I am experienced at doing this)  I think the problem was it was soft from the pumpkin & stuck to her throat.  I feel very bad now that I gave it to her.

5 Minutes later she threw up all her Breakfast (that she ate 5 hrs ago)

She then threw up more food about 20 minutes later.

And then lots of Liquid about 20 more minutes later.

I could tell she still did not feel good.

I let her out & now she has diarrhea : (

Since I only tried to give her 1/4 of the pill & she threw up 3 times after that & lots...I assume she did not get any of the meds....So Its wied that she has diarrhea to me.

Has this happened to anyone else?

I will get the other kind of Heartworm pill that I used to give my other dogs..The nice soft chewable kind & they protect against 1 less thing if I recall.

I assume I should give her that in a few days ( I will ask the vet) As she is not protected from heartworm if she didnt get thisose.

After a few days I mean, not now.

I tried this Iverhart with my old dog once...She would eat any kind of food offered or stolen.  but she refused to eat these pills.  So I went back to the Plain old soft Just for Heartworm pills- I forget the name right now (Iverhart is for Heartworm & Intestinal Parasites)

That is the pill I will get for her this week & hope she can handle it just fine. ( I will wait until she feels better though.  I am hoping she feels much better tomorrow.

Well, keep us posted. It is interesting though that she should have such a sudden reaction, but   you never know. I have read of dogs having severe reactions to Frontline when applied so it's hard to say. Hope she continues to feel better.

MY VET HAS A CLEAR LIQUID THAT I GET IN A BOTTLE AND I CAN JUST SQUIRT THE PROPER AMOUNT ONTO THE FOOD. I AM NOT SURE IF THIS IS WIDELY AVAILABLE--I THINK THEY MY MIX IT UP THEMSELVES TO SAVE EVERYONE MONEY. WITH THREE DOGS, THIS IS A MUCH MORE ECONOMICAL WAY FOR ME TO PREVENT HEARTWORM. I THINK THE BOTTLE WILL LAST ONE YEAR FOR ALL THREE DOGS AND COST LESS THAN $35. IT MIGHT BE WORTH A TRY TO ASK THE VET IF IT IS SOMETHING THEY CARRY.

THE DIARRHEA MAY HAVE BEEN CAUSED BY THE STRESS OF THE  SITUATION AND WAS NOT A PART OF THE REACTION AT ALL. THE VOMITING MAY HAVE BEEN BECAUSE OF THE PILL BEING STUCK IN AN UNCOMFORTABLE POSITION IF IT DIDN'T GO ALL THE WAY INTO THE STOMACH. SO, GIVEN ALL THAT WENT WRONG, IT IS HARD TO SAY WHAT CAUSED WHAT. BUT SWITCHING TO ANOTHER FORM OF HEARTWORM MED IS A GOOD IDEA!

Thanks Ginny,  I will ask my Vet what all my Options are.

Trixie seems to be doing better today.  Though still not feeling like herself.  She ate about 2/3 of her food at 3 different times of the morning.  She has kept it down.  She has also drank water 3 times.

She has not had a bm yet.  I am hoping that will be at least 1/2 normal when she goes.

I'm sorry Trixie isn't herself yet! I was hoping to hear it was just a little upset. This seems long. We had a dog that got the stomach flu. I had never heard of it before, but the vet gave him something and he was well within hours. Wish people had that medicine available. The stomach flu is the worst!

Thanks Bonnie,  I think she is starting to feel a little better.  She asked for Lunch.  I only offered her 1/2 of her food & she ate it all with her tail wagging here & there.

I will see how she does with that food & offer her the rest of her lunch a little  later

That is good news. Hoping it has resolved itself! We need a happy doodle to celebrate the fourth!
Tori can NOT take those heart worm pills - She TOO throws up! I actually stopped giving them. I have heard that some (white-footed) dogs can NOT take the Ivermectin. They say to try I think - Interceptor - it does NOT have ivermectin. I haven't tried these either... I know I'm bad... it just made her so sick - for days.... my vet doesn't seem to think it did, but it was a few months - with the exact same reaction - so NO thanks....

I decided to try the Heartgard pill & gave it to Trixie on Sunday after noon.

Trixie woke up in the middle of the night last night & asked to go out twice- she had the runs.  Then a couple hours later started throwing up.  Poor Thing.    She had pretty messy poops all week...But usually more at night vs her am poop...So I didnt connect it with the pill & Couldnt figure out why though.  Well Now I know it must have been the pill...just slower to get her then the last one.

I figure she will be protected this month from Mosquitos.  I still will worry about next month...So Many Mosquitos in MN.

The vet said there was a 3rd Option...But I will find out what it is & research it before I decide yes.

I feel so bad that I gave her the pill.

We're doing Intercepter too.  Rem's 1/2 Border Collie and I was told EARLY on that collies are predisposed to problems with Ivermectin.  So, we've avoided it.  It might be too harsh for Trixie too.  GL and I hope you find a solution that doesn't make her sick.
Abigail.... Tori too has had vomiting from Heartguard and I stopped giving it... I don't let her out much after dusk, b/c I'm so afraid of the mosquitoes.  I am even afraid to give her the Interceptor.  She is half australian shepherd and I too heard that 'white footed dogs' have reactions.  I think I may try interceptor.  I'm glad to see Rem does fine with that!
