Labradoodle & Goldendoodle Forum

I've got two labradoodles.  Both F1's.

Rosco's weight is in the mid high-80's.  When I trimmed his nails today I thought "HOW do I allow these talons to grow like this?  What kind of dog owner am I?"

Boca's weight is in the low 50's and when I attempted to trim her nails I kept wondering "Why do these nails look trimmed already?  Is she sneaking off and getting pedicures and leaving me behind?"

So WHICH of these dogs do you think destroys the lawn the most?  Is it mammoth talon bearing Rosco or dainty little Boca?

Well, BOCA, of course!  I don't know HOW she does it but as she runs after balls and makes fast turns she manages to toss behind her the BIGGEST divots!  It's incredible.  It's like like she's playing golf with her paws made of cleats. Baffles me.

Anyone else's dood a major divot maker without any trying?

Jackdoodle has hunks of sod flying every time he runs after a ball; he tears up the lawn with every change of direction. Totally unintentional, but he is a talon-bearing mammoth. So I guess he's the perfect blend of Rosco and Boca!

It's so wet in parts of the yard we are getting ripped up areas from running. And that's not to speak of about 6 small caverns the doods dug up this summer. The never ending list includes getting more topsoil to fill them in. Doodles are such a good excuse for an imperfect yard.
Cooper does the same! Our landlord has tried to grow the grass back by planting seeds, but to no avail. I have never had to trim Coopers nails and she is 2 yrs 4 months. Strange, because she rarely walks on concrete - we always get her to walk on the grass when there is some
Stuart and Rooney both get their nails trimmed once a month by the groomer - in an effort to protect my leather sectional.  When they get to zooming around the yard, Rooney turns the dirt.  He can't really rip the grass because here in FL we have this spongey stuff but he likes to run through the bushes and flowers and there the dirt just flies!  Stuart isn't as agile on his feet yet so once Rooney gets the dirt dug up - Stuart like to eat it!

Lol...My girl Sasha is 78 lbs. and has the same kind of nails as Rosco!!

Maybe it comes with the size of the Doodle...but...those nails are amazing!

Thankfully...she really isn't a digger!!

F.  I don't know why this worked...but...when Sasha was younger she did begin to dig several times.

I covered the area with rocks...and it stopped her right away!

I had a feeling that she was digging because there was something she smelled...and so I thought if I covered it...it would help!

Anyway...she stopped right away.  Problem solved...and no more digging!!.

I hope that might be helpful for you...

In South Carolina we have two acres...the same kind of grass that Jane was talking about...so... thankfully...no divets!

That's where Sasha runs...and runs to her hearts content...and it really does make me laugh out loud!

She's like a "White Streak Of Lightning"!!   So  beautiful but funny at the same time...

In New Jersey...well...that's another story!  The grass is different...and yes...the divets "fly"!   Lol...

I do have a confession to make...

I So dislike cutting Sasha's nails!!

Although I have a dremel And a nail clipper that shows you where the quick is...so you won't make a mistake..

I am So leary about making a mistake and hurting Sasha!!

Is anyone else concerned about this...or am I the only one that finds this thought frightening??  Lol...

Thanks. I have to fill in the holes and then I could try it when I spot the first one. I have a feeling the holes and all will be under water soon.

Lol...I hope it works for you F.

Keep me posted!

Stay safe and I do hope this hurricane is not as bad as they say...

I just find it hard to do especially since Calla really doesn't cooperate. I cannot dremel by myself. Last go round I took the dogs to a groomer just for their nails and I just might do it again.
This is Vern. I now look at our life as Pre-Vern and Post-Vern. Post-Vern we have no grass, every sofa has a cover, bushes and flowers are dead, need for new fences, and lots of slobber marks. He is just so huge and solid that in our case, Vern is our divot maker. Oh, and did I mention the large holes in our yard :)
Well Sasha and Oliver both keep their nails trimed pretty close to the quick because my patio is cement which acts like a nail file.  Once in a while I will have to clip a stray long nail but basically they keep their own nails trimmed.  As far as ripping up the sod.... SASHA is the sod ripper outer with her nails because she runs sooooooo fast and yes on the truns and take offs I see pieces of sod go flying.  On the other had my big boy Oliver like to grab  sections of sod with his teeth and rip it out of the ground - arrrrgggghhhhh.  My once beautiful sodded lawn is no more :(   Since I got the dogs I do not use fertilizer in the back of the house because I am just worried about the chemicals so the new sod lawn (3 yrs old) is no looking so good in the back anymore.  Sasha and Ollie like to dig as well so I have small holes in various places too, no to mention all the yellow grass from the pee.  I look at it this way...... I get more enjoyment out of my dogs than having a nice lawn !!!!  I would take my doggies over the lawn any day !!!!
Amen.
Halas has talons, but I don't notice him making divots in my mom's yard when he runs there. But he's just under 30 lbs, so maybe that's helping.
