For those of us always asking the question: Should I fly my puppy? this is the reason I would never do it. I understand that it doesn't happen a high percentage of the time but I say why risk your puppy or dog in the percentage that does.

Very sad and the way it was handled is unforgivable.

Horrible, horrible, horrible. I feel awful for the family and the poor dog.

Thanks you for posting this, Lisa. Here's the most important thing to take away from this article:

"Earlier this year, the Department of Transportation reported that 46 animals died while flying on commercial airlines in the U.S. in 2011. This marks an increase from the previous two years. Thirty-nine animals died in 2010 and Twenty-two died in 2009, the NY Times reported."

 

This may be a very small percentage, but if your dog is one of the 46 who is dead on arrival, it really doesn't matter that the majority got there safely.

I can't even stand it.. I can't imagine how horrible it must have been for that poor dog to die a horrible death, literally sweating to death.. I can't think about it...

Anything can happen. This is tragic. I do find it strange that only one dog was affected. I tried to find how many dogs fly a year without success. I'm sad to hear it was United since they merged with Continental, which had one of the best programs. I did get both my dogs by plane and I was lucky. I do think sometimes there is no choice but to fly a gog. It still beats putting them on top of the car.

Yes, Continental had a great reputation and they were the ones that flew the seeing eye dogs after their training.  I thought it was the best airlines for transporting animals.  I guess I would still do it, but picking up a puppy is preferable if only because you get to meet the breeder (hopefully not just at the airport).

I always thought that if I found a pup far away I would have to fly to carry him back. I've always felt that temperature and sound levels could be too stressful and who knows how they place the crates? An unforgivable response from UA. I would love to take Finn to CA with me but at 50 lbs, he'll never fit under my seat :)) or in a carry on bag. And I would be in total meltdown thinking about him in a cargo hold.
