Labradoodle & Goldendoodle Forum
Hello again
I wanted to update you all on the situation since I received so much encouragement from all of you. The whole experience was a definite eye opener for me and in the end it worked out AMAZINGLY!
We no longer have Jack :( What a roller coaster but I am happy with how it all ended even though I do miss him a lot and have pangs of guilt!
So last week, after so much thought, no sleep, tons of stress and tears, I had decided that it didn't matter what he looked like, open faced or not he had a great personality and whether or not I ended up 8 months from now vacuuming everyday because he did in fact shed, so be it, I was ready to accept it, we were all really falling in love with him.
That afternoon I got an email from the breeder saying someone had called her and was interested in Jack and better yet, they live in the same town as I do! Long story short, they came and saw him, fell in love, already had a mini doodle at home and did not mind in the least that he was an open face doodle. I think it was meant to be. They are a great family and will keep in touch, since they live in the same town and since my mom has Abby, they can still get together every once in a while for a reunion.
Despite everything it was an extremely hard decision but they have since told me Jack is adjusting wonderfully and fitting right in to their family. So my search will continue with the goal of finding another puppy the beginning of next summer. In the mean time, we will enjoy Abby which is why I posted her picture in my profile!
So...until next year....well I may pop in from time to time to ask a zillion questions! Thanks

I am so glad it all worked out--yes, I too think it was meant to be--you may have been fine with it, but all the vacuuming would not have been fun--glad you found such a wonderful solution.
Really. I bought a vest mail order the other day and when it came - I didn't like it and it didn't fit. So I just returned it for a refund. So lets hope that the next doodle you get looks more doodle like but wait - what if it still sheds because some doodley looking doodles do shed - one of mine does - so it that doodle considered defective as in disappointing to look at? Oh wait what if the doodley looking doodle has health issues - like mine does - bad allergy issues - but hey you can return it then too? Or behavior issues? Or ... or... or... I find it ironic that THIS post is right next to the post of the wonderful woman who is hanging in there with her puppy THAT HAS A LIFE THREATENING disease. Have to go now - I'm about to be sick.
Not only did I read your entire post - I clicked on "view discussions" and read your prior posts - none of it made me feel any better and I think you are feeling your "pangs of guilt". It is a public forum and we aren't all going to agree - so if you are willing to tell it - then you have to be willing to hear from those of us with differing view points.
The one thing we can agree on - is that Jack is in a BETTER place - where he will be loved and cared for - not based on his looks but for the puppy he is. He might have been the smartest dog ever, or the most loyal but you'll never know that because he didn't "look" like a doodle. Guess what - check out the DRC - they have a whole boat load of Doodles that were unwanted for one reason or another. Jack GOT lucky!
Jane, I'm thinking that was a lucky puppy to find someone to love him for what he is and not what he looks like, and yes I read the entire post and the one before that. I for one see the irony.
Hi RoxyGirl,
Glad that the best of both worlds resulted for both you and the puppy. Thank you for updating us.
So, for now, let's redirect you since you will be getting another doodle in the future.
It is very important that you read What To Look For In A Breeder
Hope your dream puppy finds you and finds you soon. So many dogs need good homes
OMD I have no words. I'm so happy that Jack is now with a family who loves him...he's one of the cutest little guys I've seen in a while.
I'm glad Jack found a family that loves him. Unfortunately many dogs are not so lucky. I wish you luck on your puppy search for next summer but really hope that you find one that fits your ideal because there might be a chance that it wont and there might be a chance that this puppy might not be so lucky as Jack. Neither of my dogs were my ideal...I didn't want a black dog and I didn't want a large, shedding, anxious dog...but now they are my world as I am theirs.
Lol!
I don't think that is entirely fair, Olga. How one's kids look--flesh and blood that you carry inside your body for 3/4 of a year--is a totally different subject. You don't go ordering children based on marketed characteristics. What if the person wanted a border collie and was duped by some breeder into thinking the german shepherd pup was a border collie..or vice versa? Is she supposed to say "oh well...doesn't matter what breed or type I actually got?" When someone buys (not births) a dog based on expected/marketed characteristics and what they purchased is not what they were told they'd get it's a very different story. I fully agree to committing to a dog for life, but there is something to be said about getting what you paid for. Jack now has a home where he meets the family's/person's needs/wants and she will get the dog that fits her needs/wants. If this was a pup that had been with Roxygirl for months or worse yet, years, and they decided they changed their mind or was flippantly saying "neah...changed my mind!" that would be different. But ultimately, if someone changes their mind early on for ANY reason...isn't it better for that dog to go to a family that wants him? If a foster dog can bond again to the forever home (that is NOT the foster home or first home) so can this pup. It's NOT the same as giving up a young child. The same self-blame and lifelong feeling of being abandoned will not be plaguing the dog's mind and heart for years. It's not ideal, it may not be what you would have done, but I don't think it is anywhere near comparable to being unhappy with one's kids 'looks' and trading in for reasons of vanity.
Nicely said, Adina.
Adina - I agree that it is better for the Jack but the problem is with the next dog - that for whatever reason does not measure up because many of us know that there can be all kinds of problems. Many of us have questioned our choices - but you hang in there through the hard times. Dogs aren't shirts - a pick one out of a catalog and order. It is a living, breathing animal that has no choice who it gets. In this case Jack got better. It's a very superficial thing to love only based on looks.
