Last night Jace had an accident in our bedroom, in the 3 weeks we've had them this has never happened!!! And on further inspection, turns out he had diarrhea, and worms..ew. Tape worms to be exact. So we have him on our screened porch with blankets, crate, water, toys. But I feel so terrible, I went to the vet and got all the meds he needs(diagel, dewormer, and flea/heartworm meds) We plan on bringing him back in the house either tomorrow evening or Monday morning. And thank goodness it's super warm here in MS this weekend! If anyone has any suggestions I would love for some pointers on how to keep him comfy and happy and also how to get rid of the stain in my carpet.

I'm sorry Jace is not feeling well. It is hard to have a sick puppy! :(

Is there any place inside your house that you could baby gate off where he could be inside but in an easy to clean area in case of an accident? He is so young and still adapting to his new home and life without his mom and sibs that is would be good if you can stick as closely to what has been his normal routine since he has arrived at your home. Outside alone and away from you could be quite frightening for such a little one.

I don't have much carpeting in my house so I'm no help there but you might try calling a carpet cleaning service or even a store that sells carpet and ask for their recommendations of a good spot cleaning product.

If you keep him tethered to you so he has no chance to go and keep him in a crate inside when you can't tether him accidents would be unlikely. An accident in a crate is a lot easier to clean up. Depending on the age of the pup, many dogs are better off from a safety point of view crated. Luca didn't stay crated at night for long but Calla was crated at night until she was over a year. We have discussions on tethering.

Have you tried crating him at night? I agree that he should not be outside, even in a screened in porch. Puppies and all dogs need to be indoors with their families.

The dewormers work pretty fast. I had a foster with tapeworms, and the meds worked in one day.

Tethering is the easiest way to make sure a little pup is safe and doing what you want him to do. I crate Lily Grace at night although I put her on the bed with me for a short time before we finally are ready to start our day. I hope Jace feels better really soon.

Pups with worms is common.  As long as you clean up with bleach and wash your hands you should be just fine.  Go about training in the same manner you would if it did not have worms.

Use a crate, take out often, and potty train as normal.  Expect accidents in the crate on occasions.  And that will be because you may not have attended to the pup as soon as you should have~ nighttime is a problem. The worming meds your vet gave you have already begun to work.  No need and no reason to leave this baby alone.

I understand and sympathize.  Tape worms is an awful experience-visually!   I am sure you are not going to be eating spaghetti for awhile but surely this is not something that has to be treated this drastic.

Just wash your hands, and bleach the crate.  Enjoy that pup.

I remember pin worms used to be common in children and parents did not make the kids sleep on the porch at night  <wink>

This too, shall pass, and quickly

Ewwy... my dogs got tapeworms somehow - they are so gross.  But fairly easy to get rid of.  In the meantime, tethering and a crate, please.  Put old towels in the bottom of the crate and when he is tethered to you keep a big folded towel handy to push under him if you don't have time to get him outside.  If you can get him outside, pick him up upside down wrapped in the towel.  Towels wash easily and can be bleached.

As for the carpet stain, a spot bot and lots of pet stain remover,  When you are down spray the area heavily with Nature's Miracle and let it dry.  You are done then.  The last removes the smell, but needs to be left on.  It may take several spot bot treatments a day apart to get it all out.  Between each treatment, vacumm area thoroughly when area is dry.  When you don't bring up any more discoloration, you know you have it all.

Please consider crating/tethering and keeping Jace in the home. He is young and being outside alone is likely going to be terrifying. He is bonded with you and being separated will likely cause him anxiety. I can't imagine keeping my Shelby outside.... That would be horrible. Please reconsider and find a way to bring him inside.

Yes... Tape worms are gross.... Shelby had them once... Treatment worked quickly. You said no carpet in the kitchen.... If it were me, I would sleep in the kitchen with my doodle tethered to me or move his crate to the kitchen and sleep near by....

I hope Jace is feeling better soon!!!!
Good for you & great for Jace!

Tapeworms in dogs usually come from fleas.

You have to kind of separate his fur/hair so you apply it to his skin (as best as you can).   I often wear latex gloves when I put it on so I feel comfortable just getting my fingers in there and don't worry about getting the liquid on my fingers.  Otherwise if my fingers aren't RIGHT there separating the hair and creating a path to the skin, there's no way I can do it properly.

My daughter's dog had tapeworms several times.  According to her vet, It turned out she was getting them from the little dog park across the street from her apartment.  It seems someone's dog had them and wasn't being treated and poor Portia got them several times.  Once figured out she stopped going to that potty area and she hasn't had any since. Anyway, I use a product called "Get Serious!" for cleaning messes out of my carpet.  It works very well.  I used to be able to get it at Petsmart but my local one doesn't carry it anymore.  I order it from a place called Jeffers.  It works very well, has cleaned up many a diarreah mess.  I also use it on other stains in my carpet too.  As others have said, the medicine works very quickly.
