Apparently when I got my girls (a year apart) I didn't know much about breeders, or what questions to ask, if any. I am now thinking that I got my girls from puppy mills, and I just feel sick. I mean I love them, and they are healthy, but to think I contributed to that makes me sick.
The reason I suspect this, is I e-mailed the guy that set it up (both dogs were flown in from different states), and told him that I had someone that was interested in a dog from Ethel's breeder, and if he could get me the name of the breeder. I have not gotten a response and this was a few days ago. When I told the interested party that I believed I went through a breeder broker type thing, she informed me that it definitely was a puppy mill then and not a rebutable breeder. Yikes!

I have to admit I felt a bit attacked when I brought up the fact that my trainer thought Lucy should be eating more protein. She is not a licensed nutrionist, but I believe she had a lot of experience to draw from.
Many of you pointed out that I should not listen to her because you felt she was out of her relm and therefore didn't know what she was talking about, but then some of you proceeded to tell me what "you" thought I should be feeding Lucy, and none of you are nutrionists either. I think we all offer what we know, whether it first hand or we learned it from someone. It doesn't make it right, or wrong. You take what advice you want, and leave the rest.
I work for a divorce attorney, and have for over 14 years. While I cannot give legal advice, I sure know the answers to just about anything any of you could ask. So, on that note. I appreciate people sharing what they know, and what they feel is right, but what I don't appreciate is putting my trainer down as not knowing what she's talking about.
Jane, the advice you were given in that discussion came from people with degrees in areas related to biology and biochemistry, one of them an M.D. It was also a subject that had been brought up before and those of us who responded had researched the subject. None of our comments were merely based on what we "thought" you should do, and none of them was "putting down" your trainer, just disagreeing with her advice on that one issue.
I would just hope that nobody here is under the impression that any other members of DK get their kicks from putting anyone down, criticizing, insulting, or hurting anyone. Where would the payoff be in that? I would hope that when someone voluntarily asks for advice, they would assume that anyone who takes the time and trouble to respond is trying to help.
I have refrained from posting a second time on this discussion. I had hoped that my original post had set a positive tone for this discussion. Many people that I have a great deal of respect have voiced their thoughts and opinions. They have been critisized (sp?) for being honest and open. The title of this post "invited" a discussion on what to look for in a breeder.
No one is castigating those of us that may have gotten a dog from less than ideal situations.
Read this discussion and decide where your next doodle is going to come from.
Remember buying a dog that came from a puppy mill is not rescueing them, it is encouraging them to breed more puppy mill dogs.
I hope I have not offended anyone as that is not my intent.
Please excuse my English. English is my second language. I often have difficulty when it comes to writing. Everyone writes so eloquently on DK that I am often intimidated, but that won't stop me, LOL!!!!!
