Tara who is a 20 pound mini always returns home from her walks and just goes FLAT! I thought the mile and a half walk was not too far for her but lately I had started to think maybe I was wrong.  So today, after the walk she again went flat but I picked up her favorite ball and offered to play soccer. Well, we played about 15 minutes of soccer then I set up a make shift agility course in the house and she ran it for another 15 minutes...up and down...up and down.  She still wasn't tired but I WAS and ready for breakfast so I stopped. Hmmmmm.

Now I am wondering if her walks are LONG ENOUGH??? I live in an area with VERY steep hills so her walks are not on an easy flat surface. And her walks are at a fairly fast pace without many stops.  I also always assumed since she is 20 pounds that her exercise requirement would be far less then that of an 80 pound doodle. That she would only need about 1/4 as much walking distance to meet her needs. Is this illogical?

Now I am also wondering if she is just laying around totally bored waiting for me to initiate something?

So I am curious about how other doodles behave after their walks. Are they tired? Are they revved up and and ready for more?? What does your doodle do?

Sorry to hear about that Kimmy. I have a friend who has Hashimoto's. She had a terrible time at first but is doing great now with the proper treatment.

I've heard that our dogs are our mirrors! Maybe you are on to something!

My two are always raring to go and will stay awake and go-go-go all day if we are busy or other people or doodle friends are visiting. They will be very tired the next day though! As for walks, they don't get one everyday,, but when I do walk them it's at least 3 miles. We have a 1/2 acre yard, that they run and romp around in all day, off and on too so I don't feel bad about walks.
they rest after walks and play, but would go again in a heartbeat. One good thing about them both is when it's bedtime and lights out, they crash! Whether they slept all day or not. I'd have a really hard time with doodles that wanted to play when I'm ready for bed.

This sounds like a good system Sue. Maybe I just need another doodle! :)

Our two go to bed to sleep every night regardless of how much exercise they have had. Phew!!! I would go bonkers if I had a dog wanting to play or that chewed a bone at night I would not be pleased. Our dogs will go like crazy whenever they have the opportunity. When Kona isn't out running or playing in a park or beach he is lying quietly on the floor. Owen does everything possible to get something going from digging in the yard, to chasing squirrels, to biting Kona trying to egg him on to play. I think it is just the dog. It sounds like Tara is always happy to play and calm enough to rest between fun times.

Bonnie it does seem like Tara is just content to do whatever we are doing. If we are sitting around she is happy to do it too. If we play she plays, if we ride in the car she rides in the car. She really is accommodating!  And  even if she brings her ball or bone into the bedroom at night she always goes right to sleep as soon as the lights go out.

Your two are a good example of how energy levels and exercise needs can vary from dog to dog!

After Shelby's morning walk... about a mile.  After I remove her leash she immediately gets a ball for a game of indoor fetch while I watch the morning news.... and then there is usually a bout of the zoomies.

After her evening walk... between 1-3 miles, she goes to find her ball for some fetch!   I don't think she's ever walked in the door and just laid down!

Christine, this is how I think Tara should be too. My previous dog's switch was always in the "on" position. She was always busy and ready to GO!  Tara is such a contrast!

Luna ALWAYS asks to go out in the back yard after coming home from a walk.  Why?  No one knows!

She usually then asks to play.  We don't walk her long - 15-20 minutes a few times a day.  It's not enough to tire her out completely, just enough to get warmed up before play time.

If she gets a walk + play time then she zonks out for a few hours :)  Just a walk is pretty unlikely to tire her out.

Sadie is the same way--we always walk for at least an hour, sometimes longer, and she always pees twice and poops once, but within 10 minutes of coming home she insists on going in the yard. Mornings are a different story, however--we go to the dog park for at least an hour, and she runs around with her friends most of the time, and is completely out for several hours when we get home.

It sounds like Sadie gets a LOT of exercise!  I'm not sure what the trip to the backyard means either. Maybe she is checking to see if there were any intruders while she was gone!

I think Luna and Sadie both have some guard dog genes in them.  They feel the need to patrol the property. You never know when some crazed squirrel might wander onto the property!

Billy goes for a two mile walk , comes home and makes a mad dash for the pool. The water temp and air temp do not seem to bother him.  He swims several laps then sits on the steps in the water.  Lexi runs around the pool chasing Billy....I fall into the recliner and collapse!
